Ludain
Many thanks to Far Trader and Boomslang -- I have shamelessly stolen your ideas for this.
Another world for MTU version of Zarushagaar. I'm focusing on about 100 years after Milieu 0, after the Illelish pacification campaign consolidated Imperial rule over the region.
If you have the time to look it over and criticize/comment, feel free.

Ludain

Ni, Ag, N, S
3 GG, 1 Belt
G2V, Orbit 4
Characteristics: Ludain orbits a G class yellow sun in a standard habitable zone. It has a diameter of 10,421 km and is 51% covered with water.
It is extremely active volcanically, and has large surface elevation variance. There are nearly 100 “major plates” and several other smaller tectonic regions with high motility. There are about 300,000 earthquakes a year, roughly ten to twenty times the activity reported on Terra.
There are two parallel base ecosystems, one that processes CO2 for common photosynthesis, and another with a wide variety of sulphur eating organisms which dominate lower altitudes. The temperature equilibrium is attained on the planet thanks to these extremely dense and vibrant ecosystems, which have served to process and fix the vast amounts of carbon and sulphur released into the atmosphere.
The riches locked in the surface of Ludain are impressive. Hydrocarbons abound, as do vast placer deposits of a variety of useful minerals. Biology has also adapted to the varied environment in extremely profitable ways, promising a wealth of useful bio-synthetic and genetic products. However, the sulphur dioxide and acid rain that prevail in the lower altitudes, in addition to an extremely competitive food chain dominated by exotic predators has precluded significant industrial exploitation by the local population. Imperial surveys of the planet are to date minimal, and both biological and mineral prospectors are still using fragmentary records dating back to the Rule of Man to target their exploration.
Origins: Ludain was settled by both Darmine and Vilani colonists during the First Imperium. Its abundance of resources made it a lucrative prize for the Ziru Sirka in the sector, and in its heyday it was an important world with an advanced infrastructure. The people of Ludain are a mixture of Darmine and Vilani stock.
History: Ludain’s prominence did not survive the Long Night. Too far flung from the more durable pocket empires, successive warring factions took hold of Ludain with ever dwindling authority. Soon they gave way to little better than pirates, who looted infrastructure and terrorized local governments until there was little left. Years of poor contact did the rest. Due to the eventual loss of the ability to manufacture apparatus to deal with the dense tainted atmosphere, the population of Ludain was forced to high altitudes, where access to water was poor. They became extremely adept at land management and water capture, working the hard land with terraces and irrigation channels linked to melt ice from mountaintops.
Some portion of Ludain’s population fell into a feudal agrarian existence where competition for scarce arable land was fierce. There is also a residual hunter gatherer population, which tolerates a more tainted atmosphere in order to exploit the vast available nutrition at lower altitudes. Social support and economic infrastructure rested on clan based family systems. The population has learned to capture and isolate lighter than air gasses from volcanic vents, and manufacture large dirigibles which they used to travel from region to region while avoiding the inhospitable lowlands.
The re-emergence of interstellar trade led to renewed interest in Ludain’s resources. The population responded to foreign overtures with deep suspicion. Those interested in Ludain’s mineral wealth needed to appeal to the local population for labour to develop the necessary infrastructure, and began approaching the planet’s many warring factions with various proposals. A competition emerged among the local governments for labour concessions in return for weapons. The planet erupted in a new wave of decades long conflict that decimated the population and made investment impossible.
In 51, the world was engaged in multiple wars that had reached a kind of genocide. The world was placed under direct Imperial control, and a peace was imposed. A naval base was established to keep it from falling under Darmine influence, and remains to protect the system’s riches.
The population now chafes under Imperial rule. The Imperial administration turned to the nomads as an effective partner in rule, and their rise has irked traditional powers. Violent campaigns of terror against the client administration and between the belligerent clans have led to an increasingly repressive government backed by the Imperial garrison. Large prisons have been built where terrible things are said to happen.
Two major interstellar mining concerns have begun building operational infrastructure, but have been slow to complete it due to the precarious security situation. A significant military presence is used to maintain control, but the world has been flooded with high tech weaponry, and Ludaini resistance groups are well armed. Reconstruction teams remain soft targets. Imperial scout surveys continue to take stock of genetic and biological resources. Firms are waiting for more research before they move in to capitalize, again leery of the security situation.
