TA Topic Suggestions

SOC-12
I wanted to throw a couple ideas out there for future TAs. If I had the time I'd work on them myself, but between working 6 to 7 days a week with an hour commute each way and trying to have some sort of personal life...not much would get done.

So, here are a couple ideas that I'd like to see, and perhaps other CotI members have ideas they'd like to suggest.

TA Suggestions:
76 Religions
76 Goverments
76 Cultures

I think BITS has already covered this ground... you might want to take a look at their 101 range (better than 76 by 33%. Or something).

Seriously, BITS does good stuff and covers these topics.

What about Personal Equipment for the savvy Traveller?

Traveller is not all about combat, fighting ships, psionics, gunmen and vehicles.

Its also about cool neat little gadgets and personal items to crowd up a PC's character sheet.

We got to have consumerism in space!!

These kinds of supplements have been the great missing link for the Traveller fans.

We need it. We want it. Come on give it up. Oh yeah and it will drive the poor guy that does the consolidated equipment list nuts.

/me looks up at bookshelf and counts five of the 101 books

Seconded. Very well done books and great as a source of inspiration or for a quick fix in game.

Take a look in the BITS sites's archives section for some free goodies as well.

One of my all-time favourite Traveller updates is the FCI Consumers guide by FASA.
It could do with an update now, especially after T4's Central Supply Catalog gave us lots of neat toys to play with.

I am backing that up 100%. A lot of missed on the Central Supply Catalog and the FCI Consumer's Guide by FASA sounds neat.

Come on, I want stuff!!

I can say that the 101 books from BITS are well done, and I'm not saying that because I contributed to 2 of them! ;)
(101 Religeons & 101 Corporations)

I forget just what the entire line is. 101 Travellers, 101 Cargoes, 101 Plots,...
all are pretty much done like the 76 Patrons of Classic Traveller and such. Check them out.

Law Enforcement covered in detail anywhere in Traveller? Including local, Imperial, or Solomani? I recall some things here and there exspecially in CT, but I don't recall a large law enforcement supplement only bits and pieces.

What about an in depth on a sector? There's lots of those that nobody has even looked at (like the ones with Sunbane/Genii data that everyone hates, but uses cause there's nothing else) or done a long time ago by obscure companies that are out of print...I think a good update of an old CT sector would make a good TA...
(And I'm not talking about freaking Spinward Marches for the 16th time either...How about Alpha Crucis...Foreven...Lishun...Sectors adjacent to the highly detailed sectors everyone campaigns in, but nobody goes into because there's no detail for the players/refs to use)

Law Enforcement practices in Known Space type Issue?

That might be pretty neat. We had a thread in the Classic Trav section of the board on law enforcement and what kind of sidearms etc... they carried.

How T20 friendly are those 101 series from BITS.
I got At Close Quarters from them on spec. It wasnt really much use to me in my campaign but it
was put together very well so Im confident on their quality so its D20 relevance I wish to settle on

Personally I'd like to see a 76 critters/aliens book with some 'just creatures' and some alien race specs for play...THe Gateway Domain PDF does do some of that nicely but expanding is always nice and the critter generator is a pain to run to mid sesion ;)

Hello Tim

All of the 101 series are relatively rules light. 101 Lifeforms is the most rules heavy and is aimed at T4. I’m not sure how easily you could convert them to T20. 101 Travellers is also aimed at T4 and if I recall correctly includes some stats but these should convert easily to T20.

If you have any specific questions about any of the 101 books please ask and I’ll have a look when I get home. Over the years I’ve picked up the whole range. I feel there isn’t a bad one amongst them.

If you intend buy a number of them you might consider joining the British Isles Traveller Support. As the publisher of they offer a small discount on all their books. Have a look at http://www.bits.org.uk/ for more information.

I would like to see a supplement like "The Anatomy of a Fleet", describing what ships make up a fleet such as how many warships, support ships, fighters, troops etc... as well as what tasks are assigned to them and training methods.
Throw in a couple of NPC examples of Fleet Admirals and it would be all set...

How about a pair of TAs covering the Old Worlds pocket empire, way out in the Gateway Domain. The OW seem perfect, because:

- 18 worlds is big enough for a good solid bit of campaigning but small enough to detail without leaving 90% of the worlds out like most sector/domain books
- They have high and low pop worlds, ranging from a thousand sophs up to sixty billion
- Don't have to worry about the cold, dead hand of canon too much
- They have the same position as the 3I (toughest kid on the block), but on a manageable scale
- There's a TL14 world (high for 993) with a class A starport to get your ship built and repaired
- They don't have to be run by bloody nobles
- About 1000 years of continuous history
- Neigbours include renegades, mysterious and scary aliens, pirate PEs, merchant PEs, a world-spanning Droyne Oytrip, all kinds of indie worlds, and the K'Kree and Hiver outskirts are just over the horizon
- There are roles for ships from J1 to J6
- They have a serious military, which gets plenty of use because...
- They act as regional policeman, lots of task forces and peacekeeping ops
- There's cold war with the Katowice Conquest (diplomacy, espionage, general tension)
- There's hot war with the Kafoe Dominate (mysterious aliens, spec ops, fleet actions, and one space battle lost already)

What's not to like? Here's a possible outline, now MJD just has to write it with his third hand...

PLAYERS' TA

Rationale
- The purpose of this TA and its intended market

History, Politics and Foreign Relations
- Repeat and expand on the Gateway 993 book's info
- Conferderation can work at interstellar distances
- The concerns of a pocket empire
- A tradition as regional policeman
- Cold war with the Katowice Conquest
- Hot war with the Kafoe Dominate

The Old Worlds Military
- History, size, role, doctrine, culture, forces, commitments, intelligence

The Old Worlds as Local Policeman
- Where, why, how

Economics and Trade
- Scale of trade, trading partners, piracy risks
- Possibly variant rules for trading in OW if required for consistency
- Communications (post and Xboat surrogate)

18 system descriptions
- Similar detail to Linkworlds, design in combination as far as possible

REFEREE's TA

Referee's info about the Kafoe and Katowice Conquest

Rumours, Adventure Seeds, Patron Encounters, and Amber Zones

Sample explanations to mysteries in Players' TA (suggestions and inspiration, not canon)

Any information needed for future canon compatability (e.g. Kafoe/deadspace?)

An adventure

Descriptions of any systems outside OW needed to support the above

Morte,

Sounds like a great idea. Why don't you write it up and submit it, since it's your baby and all that?

I'm not competent to. I just don't have the traveller related knowledge or background to do it.

I've already suggested this to MJD, but perhaps something about Naval Bases, as a supplement to TA 7 and possibly anything about fleet setup.

If you've got Gateway To Destiny, then you've got the information you need to push it forward. There's not a lot, if anything, that's been published anywhere else about them. Based on your comments, I think you've got the resources you need to do a great job. Just make sure it fits with the Gateway supplement, and you're covered!

Hope this helps,
Flynn

Heh. I'm willing to bet you're Traveller experience outstrips mine, and I managed to write something to be published. To be honest, before I started writing TA 5, the only Traveller info I knew was what was in the TNE books, the rest I have read and picked up since. You'd be amazed what you can do with the will and a few books. And remember, places like these boards and the TML have all the Traveller knowledge you could ever need to tap for info if you get stuck.

Martin is good to work with if you are a new author and there are folks aound here who'lll lend you a hand with no complaints.

So the way I see it, you've got no reason not to give it a go.

I was thinking of doing this when I finish my Specialised Ships of the Imperial Navy TA, sort of to round out an Imperial Navy trilogy. However I haven't really done much for it as yet, trying to get the Specialised Ships one done at a very slow rate.
