T5 Presentation

Moebius

SOC-7
I've looked at the book and it is daunting. Looking at the preview of the CDRom, this seems like maybe the intended presentation over a physical copy. I feel like T5 might lend itself well to an SRD type format.

T5 flows more smoothly as a digital presentation over a physical book.

Is that what was intended, maybe?

I think I saw robject post somewhere that it is intended as the complete bible for the Referee; not all of it gets used in particular adventures. But obviously the usual stuff pops out as important: character generation, skills & tasks, combat. What I like about it is the elegance in the rules such as size & distance benchmarks being repeated across multiple different systems.

My ability to use the search feature is at -1 or something, for I'm sure this has been discussed.

It seems T5 would benefit greatly to be presented in LBBs. It seems like a no-brainer. Surely this has already been thought of!

to make it fit... well t5 is 500pp letter, so that world be roughly 1100 pp igest, at 64pp/lbb... 17 LBBs, minimum.

I don't think character creation would fit in a LBB. But you know? What about a book per career that's a complete character creation booklet? That'd be a neat handout.

What could go in LBBS?

1 Career + Character Creation

2 Combat + Basic Weapons and Armor

3 Starship Owners Manual

4 Psionics and You

I could see it being a fun way to break up the current rules to create some tools but I expect the player's book covers the same territory.

Perhaps, if it were broken up into several publications, with a sleeve to fit over them all, to keep the dust out, keep them together, etc., etc., like they used to do with book sets, and/or still do with DVD sets, etc..

Seems to me if T5.1 were broken up into 3 books (a nod back to the original CT product), or even 5 or so, if logically arranged, they would be a lot easier to use, and far less unwieldy.

It goes without saying that a Table of Contents, and/or Index would be a good idea. Perhaps the Index could even be a separate booklet, too, for convenience sake, though it would probably be best to have the appropriate Index for each book at the end instead, as most books do.

I always saw the T5 'monolith' book as the ultimate bible or reference book for the referee. I'm sure that a series of LBBs wouldn't need all of the information from the monolith book.
I would love to see a T5 Lite in the same size and format as Marc's novel Agent Of The Imperium (in hardback or softback). Now that would be awesome!!

While the BBB is huge, it covers everything - far more than a LBB set. There's a lot of trimming that can happen for the scope and detail that the LBBs provide. We don't need all the careers, could probably drop college, risk/reward mods right away.

Without any rewrites, Characters and Combat can fit in 130 pages, and that's without purging all of the minutiae from the text.

I have some vague, possibly phantom, memory that the original idea was to present in a ring binder, making it possible to add or replace sections over time. As such it was a compendium of rules, designed to be picked up as the 'advanced' version of a more basic product.

But this might all be in my head.

One of the very early preliminary descriptions did put forward that idea (ca ~2005).

Yes, as a matter of fact. That is the image I was remembering. Although I believe at one time it was up on traveller5.net?
Yes, but seem to recall traveller5.net was not owned by FFE at that time and the image was a fan's vision (assume Ted Lindsey).

As said a few times, the BBB is a great tome for a referee to have.

The material needed by players could be reasonably contained. Dice, range and distance, benchmarks, money, Characteristics through to Life Pursuits & Experience, tasks, skills, and personal combat. Unfortunately that still comes out at close to 180 pages

What can be shaved off this list?

I split my BBB into five (I think) binders to help me find things a little easier. I'll take a look at how I split the chapters up when I get home.

Looks like I divided the BBB into five binders:

Binder #1:

Intro
Basic
Characters

Binder #2:

Intro
Basic
Characters
Actions
Personal Combat
The Armory

Binder #3:

The Armory through Vehicle Maker
Technology
Trade

Binder#4:

Starports & Starships
Stars and Worlds

Binder #5:

Special Situations
Adventures
Appendices

All of the binders have the index in the back. It works alright, but there is just so much information to organize.

Why 5 binders? Unless I'm missing something here, why not condense it to 4?

I think I did that so I could give someone a separate binder for character creation all by itself.
