T5 online play?

cym0k

SOC-12
Has anyone used T5 for online play with something like Roll20 or Google Hangouts?

I ask as I am interested in trying the system out, I have no local players and I fancy giving it a go.

If anyone has, what where the main highlights, pitfalls, and so forth? I've run games before (different systems admittedly) but never online.

Also, how "fast and loose" can you play T5? Should I worry about every little modifier in case the task systems b0rk on me, what can you get away with?

I've been toying with trying to do something like this with various online technologies, since getting an in person game together has been difficult. I'd be open to helping put something together, although I've not read through much of T5 at this point.

I think it depends on who you are playing with. With my teenage daughter and her friends, I keep it more RP intensive and less detail oriented.

With folks like the grognards of old, mods are heavy and the game is less cinematic.

I think that plausible risk and rewards are what really make Traveller tick. As long as you do a decent job of putting game events into perspective, your players should have a good time.

I think Orionruse's advice is good. I would like to add that the questions you're asking are dependent on what type of Referee you are and what kind of game you're running. If your players trust you, it doesn't matter what you do with the rules.

I think Traveller's complexity scales up and down nicely. You can run with minimal rule detail on any system and use C + S for everything sans mods, if you want. It all depends on what you and your players want.

I am on Roll20, the system works well and they have doubled their membership since I joined in April to 350,000. Seeing what games are available is a little difficult since their game-search (Looking For Group) seems a little hard to work and they have gone to a fixed-game-name system where you have to select a system from a selection-list, which I think is limiting. Better to use Keywords instead.

I am bogged down in the design of my original campaign (not 3I), but I worked out a background with the help of Thalassogen's T5 utilities page. Links in the background explanation work back to a .pdf of the sector and subsector maps, a datafile to plug data into Thalassogen's page and get even more complete planetary orbit tables, etc.

I have no ETA on when my game can start. I have relatively less TRAVELLER experience than most here.

EDIT:

Changes in Roll20 mean I can display my campaign to the public. Click on Details and Journal especially:
