T5 iPhone/iPad apps

Last I checked, mongoose specifically bars software under the TLL (Traveller Logo License). So you can write it based upon the OGL SRD, but can't indicate Traveller compatibility.

That's correct, so the rules set in StarBase is listed as the 'D6 OGL' rules set.

You've reminded me of something I wanted to ask: should we be updating this each year so it shows the current year? (I haven't been updating it on my site, and keep forgetting to ask..)

When you add it, use 1977-(current year). Updating it is nifty. If you really want to get nifty, use a server-side call to set it to auto-update.

This is starting to sound like a legal minefield, that I'm not entirely sure I would want to step into.

IMHO it's fairly simple.

  • The Mongoose OGL material is free for commercial or non-commercial implementations, but you can't call it Traveller or Traveller compatible.
  • T5 (and I believe all previous editions) is free for non-commercial implementations.
  • If you want to produce a commercial tool, you either need a license from FFE or Mongoose.

That's about it, though of course I am not a lawyer.

you missed that materials for any non Mongoose need to include the disclaimer.

Good point. I've not yet used anything non-Mongoose so I'd not hit that yet, but see, you can get answers to any of these issues right here!

Compared to designing, developing, testing and releasing an actual application, I've found the licensing side of things quite manageable. Especially bearing in mind that however you release your software you'll need to choose a license of some kind, whether it's open source, copyleft, commercial or whatever. It's not an issue any independent developer can dodge. It just goes with the territory.

Might be worth to actually hire a professional group of programmers to work on a T5 phone/tablet game than to expect something to arise out of nowhere from some obscure teenager from who knows where.

That would require an awful lot of money to be put on the table up-front, which would require having a pretty solid business plan for getting that money back.

Well I guess Marc has to decide what he is really looking for. I think there is plenty of market potential for something done professionally. I don't think that is the right way to go about it to just say it will cost a lot of money. I am advocating that it would be worth while to go about it in a professional manner so that its of some quality.

My thread about making a T5 Trading Card Game is a good point. If FFE invested in making a game like Star Realms for T5 do you think people would buy it?

Oh well I know nothing will be done. There will be dozens of people who say there are going to build an app in a post or two and then when they realize what they've taken on they will disappear into the darkness of space.

Perhaps you're right, but there is a huge difference between publishing a game based on T5 but aimed at a wider gaming audience, and producing apps specifically designed to support people playing T5.

In the former case you're using T5 concepts to produce a completely separate product with an almost entirely new audience, which happens to include a subset of T5 players. In the latter case you are producing apps only of use to T5 players, in the hope that T5 players may buy it and that it may help grow the T5 audience.

Those are fundamentally different things with fundamentally different objectives and potential markets.

Undoubtedly true. I've devoted a huge amount of time to Starbase. It's still a fair way from where I'd like it to be, but getting there. The trouble is my current job leaves very little spare time to work on it and I basically haven't touched it in about a year. However, that's happened before and I did pick it up again eventually, so hopefully I'll get another window of opportunity where I can spend some more time on it.

True making a card game and then an app is something more that just making tools for play. I was just brainstorm how to save the franchise but what do I know.
