T5 Erratta - Should I have Waited?

I'm personally aware of a dozen+ people who had email changes between the KS and present. I've told each one to let Marc know. Many people use work emails; many people use emails through their ISP (dialup/cable/DSL provider, and yes, there ARE people still using 56.6kbps dialup); in either case, a change in employment can result in changes in either...

I can't imagine using an email you don't have more control over for something like Kickstarter, but I can see that happening, and it would complicate things. But if they still have access to their Kickstarter account, should help.

The free version of Foxit Reader does this with its Note function. (The Pro version does have Comments).
Recommend the free PDF-XChange on Windows (XP and above).

Modern Mac Preview (included with OS) offers markup capabilities, but there are issues when viewing in other readers. Mac Preview also offers the ability to re-organize, extract and combine PDF pages.

[Bear in mind, true 'content editing' is generally not feasible for PDFs directly. PDF originated from a hack to make printing multiple copies of PostScript files possible on more limited devices back in the day (such as on computer screens ;)).]

For really good pdf annotation and proofreading markup, Acrobat Pro is still my favorite. Tracks different editors' comments, allows insertion, strikeouts, highlighting, comments, etc.

Here is the Solider chargen page marked up with errata using Foxit Reader.

I used several of its different methods for marking up a PDF.
Callouts are the boxes containing text with attached thin arrows (Haven't found how to edit that font size and color).
Arrows are thicker arrow.
I've struck out text that is now incorrect (or partially, as with Fighting in the skill tables)
Notes are yellow post-its. While hovering the mouse over the icon or the note, it will draw the colored callout style triangle.
Replacements are Teal post its. (There are also Insertion ones that are purple).

The post-it style notes have options such as
Status: none, accepted, rejected, cancelled, completed.
Mark with a Checkmark
Change the Icon (there are a bunch of options)
By default, they stack on the right side of the page, I widened my window to get them off the page.

(You can also see the book marks I added on the left: very helpful for getting around the weak arrangement of information.)

These kinds of (free!) tools are tremendous for quickly assimilating and evaluating copy. A red marker, callout boxes and post-its is fast.

He can get a Gmail account, or any numerous other free options.

GMail won't get you into QUITE a few BBS's. Hotmail, the same. WHy? Spammers' first choice of email is Gmail, then Hotmail is second. No identity checking.

That's why WE don't take GMail addys for registration. It cut the spammer-load in half overnight.

I know we're off topic here, but did I get grandfathered in or something? (And that's the wrong solution to the problem, IMO).

No. It was the right solution; the average 50 per day gmail-using spammers are dwarfing the 1-2 per month real GMail users. Hotmail's an order of magnitude less spammers, and 1-2 a week.

No one's been "grandfathered" - the system will not let a user add a GMail email address (nor any ending in .ru, .ua, .cn, .biz)

I've manually added/altered accounts to gmail on occasion. I set it to let existing gmail users continue to have the board use gmail. But if you use gmail, expect to be treated like a spammer by more and more BBS's, because it's NOT checking identities.

Gmail is pretty useless for some people because it is so strongly associated with spam; for others, it's because it's Google. For some, it's because using it would seem to be endorsing Google's political approaches.

I have a gmail, FWIW.

There are better solutions to stopping spammer, like a custom question a computer can't answer, and because it's not a captcha, it can't be automatically forwarded to a dark room in Russia where people fill in captcha's for computers.

It would just be another item to fill in. It's what the few other forums I visit do, to great effect.

Since the approvals pane doesn't have customizable fields, it would mean manually implementing it. It's an option in VB5, but not VB3.

In ohter words, not gonna happen.

That's a bummer. At least I got on here somehow.

I have no issue with people, once registered and proven not to be spammers, using Gmail - but the registration is a big issue. The peak day had 300 discrete (but obviously spammer) gmail accounts involved, and 5 ip's. And it was that way for 3 days running.

I can only take so much. And I'm not the only one. There's one board that deleted my account for being a .us email, and won't take gmail either. I'm half tempted to try to register using piratebay's mail-drop.

Most people do have multiple email addresses these days, tho', and once registered, Cryton or I will happily reset your email over to your gmail one.

Also: on average, we're blocking 20-50 OBVIOUS spammers a day. And most of them are from Russia, the Ukraine, and China.

More than 1 email address allows you to easily send stuff to yourself, and have a backup system in case your ISP goes down or someone attacks Gmail etc..

Forgive the naivete, but why does one need more than one email address?

At one point I had 8 in use - one for each job (both part time, and corporate branded), one for the University (i was taking some continuing ed, and needed to use it to have my classwork credited), one for routine use, another for large files, a third for "webmaster" at my webspace provider, and one for my ISP, because they refused to provide tech support via email if you didn't use the email account they provided. Oh, and a separate one for my phone.

Currently, I have my gmail, because it was required to use a particular (now discontinued) google service, a daily mail through my domain host, a large files mail through my web host, a webmaster for my webhost (99% spam. Go figure.), two for administration of COTI (because I don't want my private email publicized that way), one for the contact us, and another for bounced mails.

Want to yes (if one not made available) ... should or could, perhaps not {:0p

I second the motion and I would like to edit, correct and reformat my PDF whatever the cost...!

I like neat stuff well done and complete!

Some erratas are generally a fact of creativity to a certain level. I have, had great hope... will wait a full read out but I'm feeling my faith weakening!

Éli,
