T5 Character Question

I have a suspicion that there is a fatal flaw in the T5 task system, but I need to test my theroy before I illuminate it for others.

I need to see some typical T5 characters, straight out of character generation.

Can someone post five or ten of these?

Or...what do you think the average skill level is for a T5 character. In the past, Joe Average had Stat-7 and Skill-2.

What about with T5?

Well, there's more skills but you also get around 4 times as many levels also home world skills give you level one not zero. This causes an increase in some stats and higher mean skills.

For a key skill I'd expect Characteristic-9 and Skill-4 but in many cases it would be C-12 and S-6.

For more tertiary abilities C-7 and S-2 would be likely.

Main skills appear to come out around 5-7, with several back up skills related to career at 2-3 then some random others at 1-2. Knowledge's are usually around 6, unless that character has been away from home and they have decreased or if they have spent less than 6 terms in their career.

Attributes seem to be about the same as for all previous editions of Traveller, although i will say that Education is way higher than in all previous version but only if you go through the education system, complete you PHD and you will have C or up to +4 Edu if already higher than the reward for attending that part of education.

On saying that i do have a player with a doctor character that has Education C and Medical at F with several assorted knowledge's.

If you're on the Cirque de Sirkas kickstarter then there are also dozens of characters (complete with all the chargen steps) in the preview version. Here are a few ... giving UWP and skill levels (not counting languages).

This will work, fine, Rob. Thanks for typing them all out.

Now...let me do a little analysis...

EDIT: BTW, the book seems to indicate that Stat-7 is still the average characteristic for human characters, as it has been throughout most editions of Traveller. Looking at Rob's characters, I think that idea is still supported.

Not the best examples...

While those are possibly non-Term limited characters, note that Greg had me keep a lot of the NPCs around three or four Terms max, so may not represent true, long Term characters. Those PCs that take five or more Terms can get some very nice skills, around 7-10 range for primary skills. Just a word of caution.

Thanks for the input. I'll use Rob's characters as representative of the T5 chargen system.

T5 characters

Any examples from beginning to end?

Some of the tables in education could use more discussion on how to use them?

For Nobles what is the "capital" skill? Is it Knowledge?

fwitw: If a person is shooting at something at max range even double hasty he should not be ever be over 8d on the task. (vision is only so good and projectiles only travel so far after all) and if something is patently impossible ( create a star trigger with chewing gum) I would not let them attempt the task. OTOH if it is in the realm of possibility even super rare. like contacting grandfather I would let them roll 10d impossible.... and if they succeed the are responsible for what happens....

I see your biggest issue with the system as you as a gm..... if you don't like a rule ignore it... IMTU you as gm create the targets players roll under for. Also spectacular interesting is ignored in your situations.

An all too common fallacy. The ability of a referee to ignore or amend any rule says nothing whatsoever about the quality of any rule. A rule must be judged on how it works as written.

I'll weigh in here on bad rules, and worse, bad rules set and games. Just how many rules have to be bad in order for an entire rules set becomes near meaningless?

With enough flesh and bone I have a live functioning human. With a little less I have a Zombie. A little less I have a Corpse. A little less than that a Skeleton. After a while I have nothing.

I do not buy bad rule sets on purpose and am unhappy when a set is flawed. My unhappiness grows as the flaws within become more and more apparent. Really irritates me when those rules are expensive. My mood doesn't improve when errata does nothing but grow. I get really pissed when the same problems seeming perpetuate time after time.

Yes, I can ignore a rule, house rule it and so forth; I shouldn't HAVE to though. When rule sets come out, published by people with college degrees, I at least expect a certain amount of literacy, formatting, completeness and accuracy.

But, I guess I'm unrealistically picky.

BTW At what point in my rewrite does the rules set/ game become MY artistic work and therefore MY intellectual property?

Yes. One of the main reasons we buy published RPGs is to have the work done for us--the work in making up the rule system.

Otherwise, we'd all just make up our own games.

Or play without rules at all - some people (especially theater majors) do that...
