I've seen a similar thread to this before but with the advent of pdf's to complete my collection what was good and what was bad about T4. I know the Psionic Institutes book is excellent and handy for all versions of Traveller but what else works?

The books I would recommend, based purely on personally liking them, are:
Imperial Squadrons
Pocket Empires
Psionic Institutes
Central Supply Catalogue
Emperor's Arsenal
Emperor's Vehicles

If you have the TNE FF&S and like it, it may be worth getting a cheap copy of T4's FF&S as well for the few extra bits.

If the question is "What works If I don't want to run T4", the answer is somewhat different, at least for me...

FF&S2 and Psionics Institutes are easily used elsewhere. (PI needs T4 core, as well, but the whole of psi rules can be cribbed out to any ed..)

NAM is almost rules-free...
Pocket Empires is very easily adapted, hand has some useful bits.

Excellent, now another question. I never got round to playing t4 but someone out there must know how it compares to other versions of Traveller, how does it play?

No idea, I hated the task system the moment I read it ;)
I just borrowed the bits I liked - the armour/damage resolution system, the psionics rules - and used the MT task system.

We tried out the task system, but were too familiar with MT to stay with it. Aside from that, it played fine I guess.

If it weren't for a number of production problems, I think T4 would have been a hit.

I owned it. I didn't like the skill system (I liked MT's a lot, though a little finer gradation on the difficulty levels or perhaps extra modifiers would have been nice) in T4. I detested the art. I disliked the millieu, since it was not a continuation of MT/TNE and solution to outstanding issues. All in all, it didn't seem to offer a lot.
