T20 Character Generation Spreadsheet posted

Thank you for the spreadsheet. If you do a revision, could you please post a direct link to the document? That way we could avoid Angelfire's popups.

Thanks again.

Are you planning to create this spreadsheet into a full function tool?

That is where you choose the class/service from a pull down and have it process each term of service and automatically calculate xp, etc.?

Well, I need to leave something for you to need the PHB for. ;)

BTW, a new version has just been posted.

Click here to go to the web-page for instructions and info. Unfortunately, Angelfire does not allow direct links so I can't spare you the popups.

BTW, this requires Excel 97 or higher (or something that can read the files). I tried saving in 95/5.0 format and several things got lost.

:) My question is why? Why not make it a full fledged tool that can be used without having the books. Numerous such tools, be they VB files or spreadsheets, exist for D&D3E. Anyway, I think what you've done so far is a very good start. It needs to go farther to make it a useful tool IMO.

My appologies, I had a character misplaced in the filename. It should be fixed now.

As for why make you buy the player handbook, that's so QLI can make money and keep producing stuff for the T20 line. Now if they would like me to make a full version that they would sell, include with the PHB, or even give away, I would be happy to develop it to that point. But without a request (or permission) from them I'm not going to go that far. In my opinion that would be unfair.

Perhaps I was misunderstood. You're tool won't make or break purchase of any handbook. The handbook is much, much more than just generating a character. What a computer tool does is make it *easier* to play/run games.

Point in case -- D&D3E has a *lot* of tools, in a variety of formats, that support it; all of which are made by individuals on their own time and of their own volition. There has never been any problem with the creation of these. Also, the other version of traveller have the same thing -- a multitude of tools have been created by folks to support it.

Almost all of those D&D3e sheets went the way of the Dodo due to cease and desist orders in the past year. They might still be out there, but their authors stopped supporting or posting. Witness even the hell PCGen went through... they even had to remove the programs capability to "roll" your stats.. you need to either point buy, or enter the stats manually. (not to mention all the source material that was pulled).

But, I'd like to see where it's reported that WoTC has done so as well.
Hiya Tim,

How did I know you would ask that ;)

Finding those references might be difficult since the sites that the people had up for thier spreadsheets are long gone ;) . The biggest one that springs to my mind was Heroforge, which at the time was superb as a D&D3e chargen excel spreadsheet (see http://www.lorekeeper.com/html/lonepaladin.html although you will note the page no longer exists). It was one of many that were contacted, and told that what they were doing violated the d20 and OGL. A real shame too because it was a very well done, and supported sheet.

If you drop into www.enworld.org sometime I'm sure the crew can reminisce about them :D (Ask in the publishers forum, there was a big thread about it sometime back). I think the easiest way to illustrate it is to point you to the PCGen website http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen and have you ask them about their D20 compliance story.... though to be honest I wouldn't encourage asking them, you might have to wade through several hundred posts about it and some people are still rather touchy about the subject ;)

Just an FYI...

I'm emailing as well, but I've found an issue for you in #3.

Skill points are calculating, as far as I can tell, as follows:

(Class * 4) + Int Mod + Species Mod (for Human)

Thus, a 1st Level Noble with 12 Int shows 30 in your spreadsheet, when it should be:
((Class + Int Mod)*4)+Species Mod, for a total of 36.

Aside from that, things are looking good with what I've been seeing.

I was about to post the same thing today ;) . Noticed it earlier.

Hmm. Missed that in the book
. I found a couple other minor problems too. I think they are all fixed now.

Thanks for letting me know!

</font>[/QUOTE]That is starting skill points only as well ;)

Also, just wanted to be sure the actual Formula is (Class + INT mod)*4 (+species mod ie: 4 at L1 for Human, 1 at each other level).

Michael, you just made my day. I knew getting a spreadsheet to do this was necessary, but I was dreading having to do it myself. Yours is very nice. There is no way I could duplicate yours.

Thank you!!!!

Thanks for the warning. I'm in the middle of writing a php based character creation webpage for the players in an upcomming T20 game. I wasn't sure why I put a password on the page, but it probably was a little voice reminding me of this kind of stuff.

I guess since I must cover my butt, I'll only make it available to my players. Sorry all...
