[STRIKER] New vehicle Designs

Hmmm... Aren't these vehicles somewhat expensive for non-military use? And also, lacking avionics, how can they manouver near the LZ (NOE)?

It is very hard to make any kind of fusion powered vehicle cheap.
As for avionics, their speed is fairly limited anyway, and for <40 kph you don't need avionics.

Tobias

Try "working backwards" from a 1m3 MHD turbine power plant, it keeps the cost down.

You could even try working from a 4m3 MHD, since it has the same mass as the smallest fusion plant.

You lose out on endurance though :(

The premise for the grav trucks is that with they normally travel at high altitudes (several hundred feet) probably under some-sort of traffic control, and only come down NOE for the last mile or so to manoeuvre to the loading bay. Being no-military they are not flying NOE much.

The fusion plants (and grav generators) are expensive, but they give the required endurance, similar to real-life vehicles. The heavy hauler will go a long day between refuels (modern day articulated lorry). The medium truck will also go a day between refuels, whilst the light van (similar to a small transit van) will go for about a week - assuming normal working hours.

The other benefit for grav vehicles to an economy is that you don't have to build motorways etc. The vehicle costs go up, but you save on the infrastructure.

I have a TL8 wheeled truck design, which I will post later, that carries a similar amount of cargo to the heavy hauler, but is much cheaper, but has crap endurance.

Cheers
Richard

As promised, here is the TL8 heavy truck

TL8 Heavy Utility Truck

Length 12m Width: 4m Height: 3m
Volume: 144m3 Displacement: 10.3dtns Weight: 143.6547 tonnes
Price: 17,568 Cr

Armour: 0 (All Faces)

Target Size Modifier: +5 Low, No High Hits

Movement: Road Speed = 55kph, Cross-Country = 3kph,
Power to Weight Ratio = 4, Ground Pressure = 7

Movement Effects on Fire: N/A

Power: 0.6MW MHD Turbine consuming 180 litres / hour. Fuel Capacity = 1080 litres. Endurance: 6 hours

Equipment: Seats for driver and passenger, sealed environment and life-support for two, headlights, 100km radio, Cargo = 100m3 / 100tns

Crew: 1 (Driver)

Weaponry: None Fitted

This design is rather under-powered and has virtually no off-road capability. It is designed as a cheap cargo hauler within conurbations, industrial areas, and starports. It is capable of use in hostile / vacuum atmospheres. It is also suitably for heavily regulated worlds as it has zero emissions and will not violate restrictive speed laws.

Cheers
Richard

Seriously, at TL9, the anti-grav and fusion power business case for commercial vehicles is marginal.

Benefits:

Zero emissions.
Plenty of power
good fuel consumption
Lot less congestion on the roads.
Avoids road tolls.
Cheap fuel costs
Probably faster (more deliveries per day)
no need for roads / motorways (which cost at least £1 million per mile - so big savings there)
Suitable for vacuum worlds
very useful for bad terrain (mountains etc)
Very useful for worlds with very high hydro % (waterworlds)

Disadvantages

Size of power plant
Cost of PP and grav modules (massive 20KCr vs nearly 2MCr for the examples above)
Extra licencing for drivers / pilots
Costs of traffic control
Hydrogen may not be readily available (if going from TL8 to TL9)
Roads may already be available (if going from TL8 to TL9).

If the world is a TL9+ colony, has lots of water or mountains or vaccum world, or eco-friendly government, or for emergency service use, probably the grav vehicle.

For everything else???

Cheers
Richard

My take on civilian grav vehicles is that they fulfill a role not unlike that of TL6+ aircraft but do so far more elegantly (no emissions, no noise, easy VTOL-like manouverability) and far more cheaply than aircraft. They probably won't take the place of civilian trucks unless the world is both high-tech and extremely rich; but they will replace cargo aircraft, and possibly cargo sea-going ships. In these fields they'll even be CHEAPER than the TL8- alternative.

So anything that takes a chopper/plane/sea-ship in TL8- will probably be replaced by Grav in TL9+.

The military is an exception to this rule: it needs far more versatile and rapid transport and it usually has enough money to do so.

The Travellers Digest had an article on low cost grav transport and had several family car type grav vehicles (okay at TL14/15) that had costs of 100's KCr. But they mentioned that with solid state parts, such vehicles would last 80 odd years, and the average joe would buy them on a long term lease / morgage arrangement.

They did some examples, and the cr cost / month seemed very reasonable.

If you are a new colony world with a TL9 homeworld,(like a fair number of worlds at the start of the 3I) you would probably go for grav, no need for all those expensive roads destroying the environment.

Cheers
Richard

Now here's one of the items that makes the difference between lower working class (Cr160-Cr200 per month IMTU; you barely manage to pay your rent, to eat and to pay for monorail tickets) and the upper working class/middle class (atleast Cr600-Cr1,000 per month, you can save for a car/pay the mortgage if you really want). Nice car - it's better than mine and even cheaper.

Now, the upper middle class will have powerful grav vehicles (equivalent to today's expensive sports cars; the big rich guys have grav limos for these times when flying around in a 200-dton star-yacht is inappropriate

D'oh, I had actually overlooked your very similar vehicle. Well, how about this one for a really affordable gravcar:

TL 9
Dimensons: L 2m W 2.5m H 1m
Weight: 1.6 tons unloaded, 2 tons loaded
Price: 9869 Cr
Armor: 2 All Faces
Target Size Modifier: +1 Low hits, No high hits
Power: 0.24Mw MHD Turbine consuming 72 liters per hour. Fuel Capacity = 144 litres. Endurance = 2 hours.
Performance: Top Speed = 180kph, Cruise = 135kph, NOE = 40kph. Grav Thrust = 2.4 tons, Acceleration = 0.2Gs
Accomodations: Crew = 1 (Driver). Passengers = 3. Cargo = 0.2m3. Sealed environment.
Electronics: 2 Headlights, 50 pwr Radio

This one is shaped like a flying wing, you enter from the top (there are two doors, each covering two cells) and lie down in the vehicle. Not for people with overweight or who are more than 1.9 meters tall.

Tobias

Just wanted to buzz in and give thanks for all the vehicle designs. It would be extra cool, if all these designs, and more, could be captured in a spiffy looking acrobat file, complete with drawings/pictures.

The lack of already designed vehicles was one of the reasons Striker has always been in the backgroud, in my opinion. Going over all these designs is a breath of fresh air for me.

Thanks for the compliments!

I'm producing quite a number of vehicles; it takes me about one hour per vehicle so it takes time (even in complete vacation I can't Striker all day long). But there is a long to-do list ahead of me. And it'll be done sooner or later. Everything will be TL12 or lower, though, as they'll fit the relatively low-TL MTU.

About graphics, I might end up doing them in 3D renders, but I'm not that good in graphical vehicle design.

EDIT: eventually, I *WILL* be making TL13-15 designs, but these will be alien designs, mostly artefacts. Check my preliminary ideas about some of MTU's races for more details. There is one alien race not mentioned there - the Miyenn - but they are part of the Alliance (which is a Human-Dolphin-Lernan-Miyenn polity, Lernans being Human aquatic biomods, name devised before I've heard about the OTU Lurianni) and most of their technology is of Human origin (they were TL3 when the Hydra Corporation found then about 130 years before MTU's "current time", were used as cheap labor and their world - Ma'anna - was massively exploited as a source for minerals, they took part in the Insurrection and are now, for the last 30 years, a major part in the Alliance). Most Alliance vehicles are built to accomodate Humans and Miyenns, but are based on Human technology. Oh, the designs and architecture of many things in the Alliance is influenced by Miyenn culture - which I'll have to develop before creating Alliance vehicles or the Alliance polity description.

capacity is 648 liters, enough for 24 hours. Tracked suspension (2m width) with a ground pressure of 8 tons/m².

Weapons: Characteristics for the TL 12 Plasma-B gun are given on the standard energy weapons table. Characteristics for the TL 11 RAM auto grenade launcher are given on the grenade launchers table. 1000 grenades are carried in the turret.
The TL 12, 3cm, 5-barrel electric-operated hypervelocity autocannon engages 16 targets with a ROF of 800. Its further direct fire characteristics are listed below.

Effective Long Extreme
KEAP 300(28)+6 400(26)+5 550(24)+2
HE 200(9)+6 300(9)+5 450(9)+2

Only KEAP (Cr8) and HE (Cr4) ammunition are availabe. 2000 rounds are carried in the turret. When used in point defense, 4 dice are rolled.

Higher TL AFVs are usually Grav vehicles, so I thought I'd try an old-fashioned tracked one. The TL 12 tracks are probably very advanced and flexible to achieve this relatively low ground pressure at a combat weight of >100 tons.
Normally, the commander controls the PD autocannon and the gunner the two other weapons, although the controls can be configured to have it vice versa. All weapons and ammo are stored in the turret, which is entirely remote-controlled, seperated from the crew compartment.
The indirect fire control, by the way, is for the grenade launcher. I figure indirectly lobbed RAM grenades are feasible as fire support for infantry.

Tobias

The motorcycle dimensions for human struck me with an idea. Finding a motorcycle but it is built for a Droyne. Abotu the size of a childs bike with trainign wheels. Or for that matter an Aslan motorcycle. I bet it woudl be hell getting rid of a Droyne dirtbike. Or for that matter a hiver one. I am just trying to imagine that. A Dirtbike woudl be a interestign thing to have. strap it to the side of your ATV for short forays.
