Strangers in the interstellar neighbourhood

I'm still not really familiar with the OTU, and a cursory glance at the maps doesn't show any exotic stars or phenomena - e.g. pulsars, neutron stars, black holes, quasars etc. etc.

Anybody know how many strangers there are in the neighbourhood?

The presence of such things kind of dramatically affects neighbouring systems with all the gamma-ray bursting and matter accretion and the like.
 
If memory serves, I think the only real item meeting that criteria is whatever nebula is referred to of the Dark Nebula sector. I couldn't tell you what nebula that is, nor what its dimensions are/which systems it covers.

Otherwise, you are free to do what you want IYTU.
 
While not mentioned in any of the Traveller literature, there is a neutron star in the constellation Corona Australis that is currently estimated to be about 450 ly from here. It's catalog designation is RX J185635-3754. There's a brief wikipedia entry available, if you want to learn a little more about it.

Corona Australis is in the general area of Antares, meaning that (if my memory serves me right) in 2D-starmap Traveller terms the object is probably occupying a hex somewhere along a line about 2/3-3/4 the distance between here and Antares. That places it solidly within Imperial space; I once guessed it out down to the subsector/sector level, but with all my materials currently packed for a move, I can't tell you where exactly I put it.
 
Geminga is the closest pulsar to the Earth at about 120 light years. It's in Gemini but I'm not sure where that would put it on the map of The Imperium. There's probably more neighboring pulsars too.

There are some other nearby neutron stars too I think.

But quasars are way out there, forget about running across them in the TU. Same for black holes. And it's just as well ;)

I seem to remember an old Judges Guild adventure (thus now de-canonised) ... "Rogue Moon of Spinstorm" or something? Played against a backdrop of a black hole (or neutron star) in the Gateway Quadrant.

Yeah, I actually wrote a half-paragraph about Geminga in my earlier post (see above), but decided to eliminate it for time-constraint reasons.

Geminga has actually been bumped out to about 550 light years away, the last time I checked. Under the wonky Traveller 2D layout system I think I estimated it to be somewhere near the rimward edge of Charted Space, making it just within range for the Solomani to set up some kind of VERY isolated observation post, if they so desired.

And if the Imperium gets to play with that neutron star in the general direction of Antares, then I'd say it's a safe bet that the Solomani are all over Geminga like a dirty shirt.

But, y'know, it's Traveller mapping ... so your results may vary.

I think the nearest known black hole is at least several thousand light years away; but there may be one closer up in the general neighborhood that just hasn't been discovered yet. I'm no stellar physicists (although I play one on Science Fiction RPG message boards), but I suspect they're pretty hard to spot in the first place.

And you are absolutely correct that quasars are completely out of the question. Not only are they generally at the edge of the observable universe, but they also exist billions of years in the past. For all we know, someone 14 billion light years away from us is looking in our direction and seeing a big honking quasar right where we should be.

Yeah, its like in the JTAS article about the Kiloparsec drive ATU - the crew jumps to analyze a star thousands of parsecs away only to find that it had gone nova at some point in those thousands of years.

The Spinstorme black hole is located in Subsector A of Maranatha-Alkahest sector (which later became Gateway sector after AotI decanonised the JG setting books).
