Starships vs people

TKalbfus

SOC-14 1K
What happens if you use a starship weapon on a person?, say a beam weapon from a Patrol Cruiser. I would imagine it does more than the SI damage rating 3d8 from its triple turret.

There are three levels of combat in the T20 system: Person to person, vehicle to vehicle, and starship to starship. If you have any cross system combat, there is a addition or subtraction of 5 dice per level.

Person against vehicle: subtract 5d
Vehicle against person: add 5d
Starship against person: add 10d

And so on. So in the instance you gave, it would attack a person with 13d8. Most likely, the person is going to be just a scourched mark in a crater.

This is where battle dress becomes a real plus in combat: its considered a vehicle. Any person attacking someone in battle dress automaticly gets a -5d penalty.

But the armor is still ignored so the marine in battle dress is still going to be a greasy smudge in a very big crature.
Think about it a giga/tera watt laser hitting a person in 1/2" ceramic armor (you wouldn't even get smoke).
Even a marine V a vehicle isn't going to last very long (as long as the armored vehicle is atleast tl11 (more internals more SI more damage sink oh and a much bigger gun).
If marines (at this point you can insert any troop that wears combat armor) where suppost to fight tanks in a stand up fight and win the Imperium wouldn't wast money building tanks.
In the long run it's cheaper to replace tanks than marines (time, training, morale).
Bye.
Sock.

Does the term 'smoking boots' conjure up the right image?

No, a laser from a battleship is the same as one from a type-T, but the battery sizes vary, so the battleship shoots 20 or 30 at a time at each target giving a big modifier.

I have a question regarding scaling up/ down in combat. What happens if you fit say a light artillery piece, normally fitted to a vehicle onto a starship? or for that matter a marine in battledress (a vehicle) firing an auto pistol?
Is the +/- 5 dice based on the weapon or whether it's a vehicle or starship doing the shooting?

I would say it is the weapon. If you can mount a starship laser and a power source large enough to power it on your backpack, and convince me you can move it enough to aim, I'd give you the +10d :D

Of course, unless you have also outfitted yourself with armor made from ship's hull plating, you aren't getting any dice subtracted from those attacking you.

My dear Travellers,

This Brings up a point I have been debating with my Ref. (I sometimes ref as well)

We have been considering upgrading the LAG to a "support weapon" and getting the +5 dice.

Considering it's a 20mm cannon, we think it would be approprite. (It would give all those punks in Battledress a reason to duck.)

What are your thoughts on this?

The downside is of course we could be on the recieving end of things as well.

Hello.
It is an auto cannon, so if you fire it faster than one shot (single round) a combat turn you will probably break your arm or sholder.
You could maybe get away with firing single shots (the Bores anti tank rifle (end of the 1st world war and the start of the second was a man held single shot rifle - i think it was about .75inch/20mm round) Good for early tanks but a waist of time by 1940ish.
Just a thought do you realy want to be the person with the gun that can hurt them (you just became number one target).
Bye.

While a LAG is 20mm, it is not as powerful a cartidge as an Autocannon.

A Desert Eagle firing .50 AE ammo is firing a .50 caliber bullet, but it's not a .50 caliber BMG cartridge like the M2 machinegun fires. There is no comparison between the different cartridges.

You could make a Battle Dress portable LAG that fires Autocannon ammo, but it's gonna be big and heavy and scary looking.

You could also make a burst capable LAG (Say double the weight?) with a much larger magazine. Give it some armor-piercing ammo (+4 AP), and you might threaten Battle Dress with it (A Gauss Rifle with +6 AP ammo would actully be more effective, and lighter.).

I have some stats for Heavy Machineguns, and Gauss Heavy Machineguns that would be somewhat effective against Battle Dress if AP ammo was used.

If you fit a vehcile gun on a starship, it's still a vehcile-grade weapon. A starship laser on a vehcile is a starship-grade attack...

It is not possible to fire a spinal meson gun from the hip, but if somoene did it would still be a straship-grade attack....

Firing a Spinal Mount weapon from the hip? This is begining to sound like Anime and Mecha. BESM/Traveller d20 fusion anyone? ;) :D

Or an *interesting* SEH citation for a spacedock engineer.

Person against vehicle: subtract 5d
Vehicle against person: add 5d
Starship against person: add 10d
What about a model T ford with a mounted WWI weapon vs a TL14 marine in battledress.

Seems like there needs to be a TL slant to this rule.

Are you arguing in favour of the model T with a light artillery mount (5d12 damage) or the Marine in BattleDress (AR10 for TL13 as listed in T20)?

The model T doesn't stand a chance ;) The Marine is only going to take 1d12-6 points of damage to his SI25 BattleDress, he replies with a 2d20 blast from an FGMP14 vs a SI50 (a bit on the high side but I'm using the stats for a jeep),or a tac nuke

Hello.
Sorry to point out you forgot the gunner and driver get no cover or armour from the model t (i assume they lowered the windscreen to fire the gun), and they suffer an aditional 5dice of damage from the PGMP (vehicle mounted weapon v person).
Crispy critters.
Or if you target the gun they still wear splash damage.
And if you want to be graffic the marine walks up to the model t and grabbs the driver and beats the gunner to death with him.
Now that we have gotten completly of topic.
Bye.

Yep, the driver and gunner should take splash damage from the FGMP hit. Just one problem. I can not find a rule in T20 about the area of effect for MP energy weapons.
In some of the other versions of Traveller (MT,TNE,T4) MPPGs and MPFGs have a small area of effect but not CT, Striker or T20.
So take out the vehicle to silence the annoying rattle on the outside of your armour and then beat the driver to death with the gunner

Or use that cutlass they insist in training you with
