Some basic question?

I've been out of traveller for quite a while. When they say that T5 AND Mongoose Traveller are coming out, is there a note somehwere that explains the relationship in more or less plain English? There are a lot of abbreviations here and not being in on it much over the last five years, it's confusing.

Mongoose Traveller (lovingly called Rikki Tikki Traveller or RTT here) is supposed to be a simplified version of Traveller Version 5 being put out by Marc Miller (the original Traveller creator).

Details are few so far, although Mongoose has some bits of info on their website. T5 has been very quiet of late.

RTT should be out in Early 2008 with T5 at some future date.

Hope that helps.

What few details there are indicated that RTT and T5 are not related... rtt looks to be CT++ so far.

True, but according to the press release stuff, somehow they will be connected. I haven't figure out how exactly that will work, but there has been precious little info on T5 and only a trickle of stuff so far on RTT.

The wording says that.

The wording is apparently (And thankfully) a lie.

Really simple:
What I've seen of T5 I have not liked.

What I've seen of RTT is CT++ rather than T5.

From what I understand, it will inherit data from T5, but has its own mechanics. So, characters, vehicles, ships, and equipment are supposedly interchangeable. But, I haven't seen any MonTra characters.

From what was posted on the Mongoose site, I don't think they have finalized the Character Generation stuff yet. They seem to be close though.

And, as Aramis has stated, it looks a LOT like updated CT, but with some modern options (like point buy) available if desired.

Mongoose's Traveller will, almost certainly, come out in February - and is looking like a modernised version of Classic Traveller.

Traveller 5th Edition was projected to come out this year, but has been mooted as coming out next year, with a CD-Rom/PDF file coming out earlier. Previous files make it seem more like an updated version of T4.

There were press statements about the two games being compatable, although this may be just media spin to ensure that neither product has it's potential market damaged. There has been little public development of T5 since that point, however, and it's not entirely clear what is happening with the material, or actual release dates.

So far, it looks like RTT is CT+ done well. I'm very happy with what Gareth's been doing, and am looking forward to buying my first Mongoose product in Feb.
