Solo Traveller me myself and I

You can, but I think LBB 3 trade was easier than everything which came after it for solo Traveller - and that includes LBB 7.

LBB I sadly have not idea what it means good sir!

LBB = Little Black Book

The original "Classic Traveller" game came in 3 small books with a black cover.
Little Black Books 4 thru 7 were eventually added that expanded the careers (Mercenary, High Guard, Scouts, Merchant Prince).

Just as a point of interest, all are available as PDFs from DriveThruRPG individually or you can get all the Classic Traveller Books (Rules, Suppliments, Adventures, etc) on a CD from Far Future Enterprises (FFE) for about $35 (link under Traveller Store Tab at top).

I think you could solo some elements of the game, like trading and starship economics. Adventuring would be hard, though, since much of adventuring is not knowing what you're up against.

D&D 1st and 2nd editions had rules for soloing, but they dropped them as the game matured. You could still do it, but they (and Traveller fans) figured out that it's much more fun with others.

There's also 'soloing' in the sense of many Traveller activities (of any brand) can be done alone: character generation, starship design and world building all come to mind.

But of course, I find all of those things more fun when done with a social aim in mind: to play my character, fly my starship, or Referee an adventure on the world I have built.

Guys where will I find a group that play Traveller five in NJ. Traveler 5 as content-rich as it is is confusing unorganized and just not accessible to a novice Traveller player like myself that never pick up a Traveller book until 5. I may just get a little black books 0-7 so least I will have everything for the careers.

Robots can be a career!

Well, I had to become a T5 evangelist. Some members were easy to convince. Others were not.

But, you're right: there is a STEEP learning curve. On the other hand, the original game was almost as complex (once you include all the books, which are basically included in the T5.09 manual), and nowhere near as consistent.

So, start with character generation. It's a mini-game anyhow, and it's always solo.

I guess I will keep making characters until I figure it out!!

How do you generate the life events city and such?

T5 has a later chapter on "EPIC" adventures. You would still need quite a bit of imagination, but EPIC adventures would give you an idea how to do it.

Classic and other older Traveller incarnations include the concept of patrons. A patron is someone who has a job you can do. You could get a copy of "76 Patrons" from the CT era (available from FFE on CD -- which also includes a whole bunch of CT-era goodies).

Bottom line? Imagination. Any situation that has even occurred in a video game can be modified. Or, watch Firefly reruns. (Firefly is known to be an offshoot of a "role playing game" that Whedon played decades ago. Many believe that the unspecified game was actually Traveller.)

Also in the CT era, get a copy of the double adventure "Marooned/Marooned Alone". It's on the same CD as the other one I mentioned.

If the previous link doesn't work for you, or you want more options, you might consider the Mythic Game Master Emulator (GME), which permits you to do solo or group games on the fly, with little to no pre-game prep.

Of course, I suspect your games/adventures will be better if you do spend the time to do some prep work, but with their system, you can also do things on the spur of the moment too, and the system has rules for plot twists, etc., as well, to make them more interesting.

Definitely worth checking out in my opinion.

I've got 37+ years in with Traveler and I find T5 really really really dense to plow through.

I would recommend the Cepheus Engine or the Traveller SRD which are both free on-line. They are much shorter and give a good overview of the core stuff, and don't have the gaps in the rules that Classic Traveller did ("I fire at the air/raft with my laser carbine and hit. What happens next?").

I like the Star Trader rules. They're pretty cool. I'm using a hacked version for a solo free trader group. The encounter tables are excellent and some of the random bits. But I have found MgT's Merchant Prince supplement to be very helpful. THey have an abstract system for risk/reward and so on. I also put in Patrons and the Mythic GM Emulator but MGE kinda requires more work than expected. Which is not a dig since it's a cool product that does what it says on the tin, I was just hoping for some magic plot wand. My bad.

And with the online cargo/passenger generator (dang, link is flagged at home not here), you can save tons of time.
