Ship's Bell

Are there any canonical references to starships carrying a ship's bell? I could see the Solomani keeping that old custom.

Not that I can think of. I do not think the massive ship's bells of capital ships would be appropriate, but the smaller ones would be.

Chances are that the British would use the existing bells of their most famous warships, when they had to build starwarships.

And moggie mascots.

If the Confederation continued the tradition, they probably raided every military museum within reach.

Not sure bells with clappers would make it through the zero-g era.

IMTU recorded drum rolls sound the "beat to quarters" but I haven't used bells.

Every half hour of a watch. Eight bells is the end of a four hour watch.
It’s all about time keeping, with the proliferation of clocks and watches there is little need.

Though in military honors and the like command rank are rung off and on ships, in conjunction with a announcement on the 1MC. There are others like bury the dead where it is used.

Note even the Bosun’s Pipe is still used.

There is one on the ISS right now, but it appears that they only use it for crew changes involving former USN personnel and a few PR events.

Jump Dimming serves a role similar to the dive klaxon in WW II subs: A big announcement that "Big things are going to happen. That it also frees a negligible amount of power for jump... dimming is almost meaningless in that context.

The version I recall is that the Vilani dimmed the lights because their power plants barely had enough energy to activate their jump drives.
