Ship types

parmasson

SOC-14 1K
OK naval terms definition time . . .
In a LBB 2 “pt” universe what does it mean to have the title
What defines each of these types in pt?
Role in the fleet?

Patrol cruiser 400tn “T” we know
Battle/light/medium/merc Cruiser
Carrier
Frigate
Battleship
Dreadnought
Troop transport
Dromedary /tanker

pt as in Proto Traveller

It's just been a long day
For some reason seeing the Patrol Cruiser mentioned next to PT rang up the image of the relagation of the Type T to PT status in the Big Ship TU and I was too fogged* to recall this little thing called proto-traveller

* Still am, and now I'm off to play a little Traveller and in my current state my character is likely to do something stupid
Maybe he should change into his red shirt.

Escort 300-400 tons (Gazelle) small, quick and armed

Cruisers
In military terminology, a cruiser is a large warship capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously. Historically they were generally considered the smallest ships capable of independent operations — destroyers usually requiring outside support such as tenders — but in modern parlance this difference has disappeared.
Heavily armed and armored for their size designed to operate on their own.
The Patrol Cruiser is small but heavily armed.

Heavy Cruisers are 800 tons +

Frigate 600-800 tons [edit]
In modern military terminology, the definition of a frigate is a warship intended to protect other warships and merchant marine ships
faster than usual, sacrificing some armor/firepower for speed.

Dreadnought / Battleship 2000+ tons armed to the teeth. A floating gun platform

In naval warfare, battleships were the most heavily armed and armored warships

I'd put frigates at 600-1500, Cruisers at 800-2000; traditionally frigates are smaller than cruisers, tho oft better armed per displacement.

The Burke class is NOT a good example; she was designed to be a cruiser according to some sources.
