On the face of it, but as mentioned in the article it was an unarmoured and slow drone, along with other factors like the long dwell time (several seconds) to kill it, the fact it wasn't evading, the fact we don't know how long it took to get the laser on target since the video starts with the laser on target, etc. etc.
Nah, not really impressed.

There's comments? I missed that, yeah, that's a good one ShapeShifter If the gov wanted to fake this I'd have hoped for something a little more spectacular. Why bother faking it this way would be my reply to any conspiracy nuts spouting such.

It's shape reminded me of the Zho Type S from FASA, a wedge/manta look,

Interesting the BBC says reflec worked, I've often heard it can't in laser articles; so score one for TRAV.

The downside of laser reflective coatings is they make you a very easy and bright radar target and so a simple shot for conventional responses.
Something not (usually) mirrored (bad pun) in Traveller's application where you can wear Refelc under other armour and gain the benefits of both, without any mention (usually) of radar signal or damage to the outer armour. I would also think it'd be one heck of an insulation layer, meaning the player should be roasting, or venting a huge IR plume unless employing some heat damper. All in all, Reflec is a bit too magical for me as it is (was) presented

Think the concept of reflec in gaming goes back aways - something about it in Star Frontiers, IIRC as well as Traveller, though I always got the sense it was armchair gamer/scifi reader logic "If lasers are light, and mirrors reflect light, then mirror suit should reflect lasers! Suit made of mirror stuff = reflec."
Come to think of it, there were quite a few games that had reflec/mirror polished surfaces/armors being laser resistant, if not outright laser proof in its setting.
Original Rogue Trader, and I'm not sure, but I think Dragonstar had it as well.

Gah, not the 'new/current' dragonstar.
There was an old RPG game, I coulda sworn by the same name, but had lots of power armor, very detailed weapon systems, and a prior-career character generation that actually named campaigns the character was involved in as well as medals, promotions, commendations etc.
All I remember was way too much detail for damage/location etc. very rounded style battledress and drawings for like all the guns. Musta been circa 1988-1990.
Found it - Living Steel and its compatible battledress combat game Dragonstar Rising - Phew, I'm not just imagining things. At least, not that.

Reflec works fine so long as you maintain the pristine coating on the first surface mirror.

This laser is pretty low power compared to what's well along on the lab bench these days in the line of stuff that doesn't need a lot of toxic materials gulped in substantial quantities. But an end-to-end demo/horse and pony show isn't bad. It shows that stuff can get off the bench, for a demo, at least.
