Hi folks, being new here I have created this poll to get a "feel" for the crowd... As a Referee I am very much a roleplayer now. When I first started gaming I was a gearhead. So I've had my head in both spaces at different times and empathize with the fun associated with each

One of the reasons I got into Ref-ing games was my gearhead notions wanted to bear some fruit to see how things worked in actual play. In other words, I saw gearheadom as static, while rp-ing as dynamic. Maybe most Refs tried their teeth in gearheadland? I think a Referee needs some gearhead experience to understand the game he/she's running...

Those are a few of my thoughts on this... How about yours?

(As a tangential question/comment: sci-fi rpgs demand quite a bit of geadhead thinking as opposed to fantasy, don't they? :D )

Hi again. I saw Liam's poll, but I wanted to survey ppl in a different way. My apologies to Liam if I seem to be repeating the issue. I am trying a different approach to do the survey :D

I'll qualify my opinion by saying in 20+ years of gaming I have never had a chance to play in a really good Sci-Fi game.

However, i don't agree with your statement about needing to be less of a gearhead to play in a fantast settin. If I take your meaning of gearhead to mean rules mechanic.

I have always used the rules a way to reflect my campaign worlds. That being the case I learn how a particular game mechanic is used to reflect a particular reality and then adjust/scrap/rewrite until it conforms to the picture of reality I am trying to portray.

This is one of the wonderful things I love about D20. It is highly portable and has a wonderful core concept. I know, I know it is NOT the first universal playing system on the block. But I'm of the opinion so far that it is the most stable and flexible with the least amount of over head. Sorry not trying to hi-jack.

Back to point of poll.

Currently I am mostly a gearhead as I'm new to the setting and couldn't pay ransom money for some players.

I try to keep the gear part of it away from the table however and focus on roleplay during sessions.

As Yaskoydray can attest to I live to be a gearhead-since I've only been actively roleplaying the last 12 years but collecting CT since '80. :D
