Revolver

So one of our group's PCs has a revolver, and I wanted to give the player a few flavor details. Are there any known Imperial makes or models? Likely manufacturers?

The PC is an ex-marine. Could the revolver have had a largely ceremonial function in the sevice, like a saber today?

Considering the low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility and the variety of ammo it can shoot I would say a revolver's role in the Marines would be anything but ceremonial.

Here's an idea: why doesn't that PC use a replica of a (very old) IRL revolver model? Something like a Colt or Smith & Wesson but built of TL15 materials? Maybe it comes in a weird color, or better yet, morphing coatings for different camouflage patterns.

If you want to really go for the bling factor you can have it gold-plated and come with a lathanum inlay on the grip.

Odds are it's a very servicable working piece. Probably over engineered. Not likely a dress piece. Revolvers are very versatile; shot shells and other non-rounded tip shells work just fine in revolvers, but many don't work so well in automatics.

Revolvers thus can have flare, shot, flame, flat-nose wadcutters, APDS, and other special rounds with easier manufacturing tolerances.

I think I remember seeing a YouTube video with a (functional) revolver chambered for Nitro Express rounds. They use those bullets to shoot elephants, so I will leave you to imagine the size of the cylinder on that thing.

Then there are those in which you can shoot either .45 Long Colt (normal type round) or .410 shotgun shells.

Well, Archduke Dulinor used a magnum revolver on Strephon's double that fateful day at Capital - so they're probably popular on Dlan.

Instellarms, LIC: Founded in 626 is the biggest arms maker owned primarily by several megacorps.

Revolver negatives: wide, low capacity (5-6-7-8) rounds in general with more = wider.

Revolver positives: jam free (though when one breaks it's over), better accuracy, larger and more powerful projectiles (not really covered in TRAV well).

Damage Comparison (GURPS as covers multi Ammo types)

.38: .38S&W (2d-1) .38 Special (2d) .357Mag. (3d) TRAV 9mm (2d) TRAV 9mmM (3d-1)
.40: 44-40 (2d+2) .41Mag (3d+1)
.44: .44 Russian (2d), .44 Special (2D), .44Mag (3d+2)
.45: .45 Colt (3d-2), .45S&W (2d-1), .45ACP (2d).454 Casull (5d-1)
Note that in GURPS after rolling damage the .40-.44-.45 increase final damage by 50%.

Use the TRAV weapons for rough idea of: CT, SNAPSHOT, STRIKER, MT, NE, D20 & MgT comparisons.

Magnum Revolvers replace swords in Sylea for nobles. That's why Dulinor carried one in Court when he assassinated Strephon. It's not necessarily a tradition elsewhere in the Imperium. If your ex-Marine PC is perhaps an ex-member of some Archduke's Household Cavalry or something (or was in a unit commanded by someone like that) perhaps the tradition has spread.

IMTU (Using T20) I added what I called the BFR based n the S&W .500 Magnum. 5 round capacity, Damage 1D12 and ranges of +50% over a standard revolver.

Here is a popular Mechanics article on the weapon: http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/sports/1277336.html

IRL it would not make much of a duty/service type weapon owing to the weight and recoil, but it added a lot of color to the game.

What do people hunt with revolvers like that? (Please don't say other people.) I live in state with a pretty strong hunting tradition, but I don't know anyone who uses a revolver.

revolvers are carried as backup weapons ..to deliver the final killing blow or incase you woke up that napping grizzly or bobcat ..since a double action can be drawn and fired in one fluid motion its perfect when youve just fired the heavy bolt action rifle and suddenly youve got a peeved wahtever that was napping in the shade of a tree neaby coming at you..(yes happend to me more than once back in northern kentucky more than once)

Rabbits, Squirrels, Fox, Fish, Snakes.

(Sport fishing: Halibut are usually brought to the surface, THEN shot in the brain, then bought on board.)

Revolvers can also be nicely ported/compensated over auto's due to their non-moving barrels. Typically revolvers have a greater powered cartridge than similar autos as well.

This is one of the reasons I love hanging around certain RPG forums; every other day I learn something new.

My reaction was: "What kind of idiot shoots fish in the brain?", but a 5 sec search on google showed me what a halibut is. Yeah, I can see how you could need a fast-killing method when the fish in question can weigh several hundred kilos and be larger than you.

It's not that the fish is a threat to the person; it's that a live halibut is a threat to the BOAT.

A 250# halibut (about 120kg) TOWED a 40' boat. Over a mile (1.6km).

A typical halibut sport-fishing "experience" is get on a boat, sit aroud for 30-60 min.
Then, everyone baits their end tackle. Everyone drops lines. Either very quickly everyone's catching, or no one's catching. in the latter case, another 10-20 minutes under way, and repeat.

Once people have them on, lever up, reel down, repeat. Smaller halibut (50-120#; 20-50kg), get brought up, and on a good school, the skipper literally will walk around the boat shooting any that appear to be over 50#. Bigger ones instead get harpooned, and tied to the prow.

When the big ones are harpooned, they usually take off... and drag the boat.once they slow down from exhaustion, drag them up and shoot them, then everyone works to get them aboard. Crew and passengers alike.

Smaller ones, 50-80# (20-65kg) might be brough aboard and beaten with an oosic or a fishbat (natural or manmade truncheons); bigger ones would be harpooned, tied off, allowed to run, and when tired out, beaten with the oosic. Walrus and beluga whale oosic is the typical aboriginal tool for the job.

Under 50#, typically, they get thrown back.

Once everyone's got limit, 30-90 min back to port, followed by a cleaning frenzy.

Taking a cue from MT, I always have nobles having signature revolvers. Each one designed a special way to meet the noble's character. As far as names, one could always Vlandize some of the Terran names eg. Smitii & Wesii for fun.

People would hunt primarily whitetale deer with a revolver like that, and maybe other big game like elk or black bears.

Owning to the decreased range hunting with a handgun requires a little more skill in getting a deer withing effective range. It is somewhat like bow hunting in that regard. Getting close to a deer is a challenge; deer are very weary and getting close to them is not easy, trust me I've done it.

Not all areas allow hunting with handguns and the vary. I think in PA you cannot hunt with a pistol, but revolvers are OK.

>deer are very weary and getting close

that should make them easier to hunt in your area since they are so tired:rofl:

now the more common, wary and suspicious deer found everywhere else should prove a decent challenge
