Requesting Art sketch: SolSec robot

Maladominus

SOC-14 1K
Hi all,

This is an extension of the Art Discussion Thread, but it's a little unique. I am requesting help from any of the talented artists here if they can help sketch me a specialized Robots (Book 8) design that I am using in my campaign.

The Robot is the Model SB II SolSec Light Security Robot. I will post full specs below, which follows 100% the LBB8 rules on robot construction. This is a 100% canon Classic Traveller design. Sorry, this is not some uber-powered munchkin robot. The LBB8 makes it hard to create over-powered munchkin designs anwyays.

Second, please understand the reason for choosing the Air Cushion modules. I already said this was a canon design. And canon Traveller specifically states in 50 places that the Solomani Confederation is piss-poor in grav technology (compared to other empires) and that grav robots are rarely used in the Solomani Confederation. AC technology is preferred, and tracked and wheeled robots (e.g. R2D2) are even common. Therefore, I had to resort to using AC (air cushion) locomotion for this purely Solomani robot, which made this design a very very tough feat! But in the end, I succeeded.
My design works. My design breaks no rules from LBB8. And my design is pragmatically affordable, since a SolSec admnistrator can buy 4 of these robots for about 1 million credits. Not only that, but these robots are actually quite intelligent!

If anyone can come up with a sketch based on my description, I'd be tremendously grateful!

SolSec SB II Light Security Robot

SolSec uses robots and droids extensively for security operations. Although the service itself does not have any capacity to manufacture its own robots, it contracts companies such as Panstellar to produce an array of sentry droids and warbots suited to its clandestine operations.

The SolSec SB II security droid is a lightly-armed robot used extensively by the service. Although this particular model is not SolSec's strongest armed robot, it is one of the more flexible designs. The unit is able to operate semi-independently and requires minimal supervision. For the most part, these robots are commonly attached to a small squad of SolSec monitors charged with policing duties.

The SB II has a dome-shaped chassis with an appearance reminiscent of the UFO, approximately 1 meter in diameter. A small protruding and rotating head sits on top of the dome. The head houses the sensors array and much of the electronic circuits that make up the CPU. The robot is powered by three air cushion modules, allowing it to hover 1 to 2 meters above the ground. Its unique shape and mode of locomotion has earned the robot various nicknames as the 'UFO police' or the 'hovercop'. Confederation civilians are often intimidated by the appearance of an SB II, because it usually indicates that SolSec operatives are engaged in serious operations nearby.

TheEngineer, Maladominus,

I feel your pain. I submitted the manuscript for a TA, Robots of Charted Space, back in September 2003, and it's been waiting for art since November 2003. If there are any aspiring artists interested in creating robot art, I think they'd be in pretty big demand, at least for a while.

Good Luck,
Flynn

The force was with me !

I just cant stand unanswered posts....
Well, I had half an hour for a quick sketch.
Results will come along in just a little time (have to upload pictures first..).

Roughly sketchting a robot is not such pain, if there is a description of appearance around. So Maladominus did a good preperation work

Yeah, it seems that very few artists have experience with 'robot' artwork. That's why I only asked for a mere sketch (black and white pencil type art), since a 3D render would be a lot of effort. I myself have zero artistic ability, my art talent is limited to stick figures.

I'd appreciate any effort TheEngineer, if you come up with anything.

Looks very nice Mr. Engineer!

A few thoughts for going beyond the "sketch" stage:

It would be nice to have something to indicate scale (such as a person).

Where is the light arm located ? Behind a door perhaps? If so, the edges of the door might be made somewhat obvious.

The fans should probably have some kind of screen over them to reduce accidents.

Again, these thoughts are for future tinkering, since what you did as a "sketch" is more than I think our host on this thread was anticipating (in a very good sense of more).

Hi !

A person, a person ....
I will see what I can do.
Perhaps somebody has a good picture I could use to place the rendered image in.

The light (retractable) arm is located just parallel to the snub pistol at the bottom, difficult to notice at this perpective.

The fan protection is a good idea. Well, I wasnt very sure about look of the air cushion component generally.

regards,

Mert

Hi !

Joseph, its done with Realsoft 3D V4.5.
It has a pretty SDS modelling technique, letting You do some kind of modelling (even the fans - its just a "tunnel" function between two opposing faces) awfully fast

Overall modelling took perhaps 10 minutes, assigning standard materials 5 minutes, setting light and environment perhaps another 5 minutes, plus 1 minute of rendering...

So really just a sketch

Very nice sketches, Engineer!

I can think of only a couple things. First is what is already mentioned by others, to give the robot some sense of "scale" (e.g. to give an idea how big it is). Second... would be purely cosmetic, the Solomani symbol (cross-wheel) to indicate the robot's service affiliation. These suggestions are assuming that you have time for them, of course.

I do like how you made the hoverfans really a prominent feature... that's a nice touch as it makes it clear what mode of locomotion the bot uses.

Oh, great, now I've got an image of C-3PO wearing lipstick and eyeliner. And fishnet stockings. And *now* I'm seeing The Robot Horror Picture Show...

The Illo posted looked almost like what I'd pictured, but not having 3D software, wasn't able to draw effecctively... save that rather than having the fans on the outliers, I'd have put them as (again, 3) ducts in the body.
