Religions in the T4 Universe

I am putting together a scenario that is based in the film "The Chronicles of Riddick" where religious crusaders have been conquering worlds in order to convert into a religion or die as they are. I am using Medieval Europe as a base for the background of the religion. Are there any new ideas for this scenario?

For "renegade/rival" religions, BITS "101 Religions" is a good source. For plot, perhaps in one instance an arbitrary media coverage may force your characters to justify their actions.
For another plot twist, the subtle attempts of conversion against a major player by a soft spoken heathen representative could have your player(s) doubting their cause and their faith.
And if you just want to play guns, guns, guns then how about a people who begin to practice scorched earth strategy, kick your butts, or mass suicide to obviate your plans of religious subrogation?
