Quick Question: TL-F or TL-15?

One for those in the know:

When writing text about a world, which way should the planet's TL be shown? i.e.

"Planet Wibble manufactures TL-F widgets and sprangs"

or

"Planet Wibble manufactures TL-15 widgets and sprangs"

Answers on the back of a used £ 50 note to the usual address, please........

Eyethangewe.

I use both, depending on mood.

However, if you want grammatical correctness, pick one and use it exclusively throughout what you're writing.

I'd consult the style guides and recommendations from the company I was writing the material for. If using one of the rule versions that doesn't do hexadecimal notation (such as GT), the answer will be obvious; otherwise, I'd expect the publisher to have some guidelines already set up.

I don't have a £50 note handy, but if you could send me one I'd be happy to scribble a reply on it. Hmm, better make that two £50 notes, I tend to have to edit my replies before I'm happy with them...

:smirk:

We now return you to more serious answers on this vital subject...

Personally: If writing ref material I'd go with Captain Midnight's answer. But when writing fluff/fiction I try to avoid the issue entirely and simply say something like... "Planet Wibble manufactures the most advanced widgets and sprangs."

I suspect you're asking in the first case though, not for a fluff/fiction writeup.

The answer is:
"Planet X which has a plan manufactures TL-F widgets."
Why, because Traveller uses a hexidecimal notation despite the mistakes made in GurpsTraveller. :)

I assume you use the Letter when it's for a UPP that way everything stays nice and compact/orderly. It's to signify when a two digit number occurs as shorthand.

I just ran a search on my CT PDF collection and "TL 15" shows up in

CT B07 Book 07 Merchant Prince.pdf p37,43
CT B08 Book 08 Robots.pdf p13, 23
CT M03 Module 03 Spinward Marches Campaign.pdf

TL = 15 shows up in the last book under High Guard stats for ships on p35.

I didn't search thru the JTAS pdfs...

I'd think either way, people will get the drift. Just be consistent.

F for a more technical piece.

15 for a more folksy, player/ reader friendly thing.

TL-15 would be fine. But, some of the UWP codes (say, Gov or LL) would still be in letters (IMHO), as they are noted that way in all the system creation tables. Not really worth $50; more like Cr0.02.

I use TL F or TL-F, mostly because it makes it totally clear that I'm talking about Traveller TLs, not GURPS TLs.

Good point, though iirc over on JTAS they used TTL and GTL in the articles that treated both since the clarity is only there for the letter TLs.

Eyethangewe!

Thank you everyone :)

I've made my decision:

Use "F" for stuff like vehicles/UWPs/UPPs etc;

Use "TL-15" in writtent text/descriptions.

Now, who wants to buy a TL-15 widget or sprang? Only £ 50 sterling.... ;)
