Quick question on chargen ranks

7thPawn

SOC-1
Hey there,

Just found the forum after going through the T20 book I just got, and I have a question on one of the classes and ranks. You see, I get them all but the Noble. They list the ranks with the Soc needed for the different societal ranks, and you get to roll for ranks apparently, but if you succeed, do you get a Soc point, or just move a full step up the ladder (IE, you are in for 3 terms let's say, survive all of them and make all rank rolls and you started as a knight, would you be a Count with a Soc of 22)?

Sorry if this has been answered before, but the rest of the classes are self explanetory for the most part.

Cheers

Okay. going from the practice in earlier Traveller materials and the Difficulty number for promotion...

I'd say yes. Promotion in the Nobles is a +2 Soc.

however. you can always use as a +1 (assuming you are the GM)

Perhaps it represents an additional title. 16 to 17 can represent getting boosted from simple knighthood to Knight Commander or Grand Commander of your Knightly order.

(IE the order of the Cross of St. Micheal and St. George: Companion of, Knight Commander of, Grand Commander of, : Sir Blah CMG, Sir blah KCMG, Sir blah GCMG)

In addition the Knightly orders aren't quite on the same 'rank table' as Landed titles (Baron, Marquis, count, etc). One may argue that they are like Warrant Ranks compared to Commissioned Officer ranks.

And nobles can hold many titles. So mabye your Count is really a baron who ALSO has a high rank in a Knighly order.

Just some suggestions.

okay... this is also being discussed in greater depth and with better eloquoence on another thread

t20 discussions: Noble Promotions.

some people there have put some real thought into. I'm tempted to adopt some of their ideas.
