Quick question: Can you change professions?

Can a character change professions for basically any reason? I see hints in that direction, but I can't find any specific reference to it outside of Craftsman and Functionary.

For those who bought the Traveller5 CD-ROM, the Traveller 5 Master Text Old pdf appears to be a preliminary version of Traveller 5, and it has a page explicitly entitled Changing Careers, page 93 of the pdf. A table refers you to a set of conditions governing when it is possible to change from any career to any other. One attempt can be made per term.

Simple answer: Yes a character can change career at the end of any term.

At the end of each 4 year term you make a roll to continue in a career.

Page 74 has a note about Changing Careers and apparently refers to the missing table in the MasterTextOld.pdf so you've just identified errata.

I think however the reason the Changing Careers table was omitted from the final document is that it makes it really restrictive as to what careers you can transfer between. For example an Entertainer can never become a Scout, a Merchant, a Rogue, or an Agent (no Mata Hari in the 3I :O)

*fluff*
The way I'd handle it is if the player declares at the end of a term that he wants to change careers he can make the qualification rolls for the new career. Actually I might suggest that he make the continue roll so that if he fails to qualify for the new career he can continue, otherwise if he's resigned from his old career and failed to enter a new career of his choice I'd shunt him into the Citizen career.
*end of fluff*

Hope that helps.

I think Reban hit the nail on the head. You can basically change careers whenever you like under two provisions. The first is that you have to make a re-enlistment roll for the old career and not roll a 12 (which is mandatory continuation) and the second is that you have to succeed in enlisting in the new career (with all the requirements that entails).

D'ohh. Espampson is exactly right. I forgot about the mandatory continuation on a 2 so you must make the continuation role on the current career before attempting to qualify for the new career.

Think of it this way. Would you quit your job before going for an interview in a new career?

Mandatory Continue.

I thought the Mandatory Continue was 2. I may have to go check that. Also, don't forget about the Reserves calling you back up. Maybe that was the roll of 2. I swear, stop doing regular CharGen and it all slips away. Memory, you traitor.

EDIT: Memory, you are absolved. Page 74, second column, it is in fact 2 for Mandatory Continue. Also, on page 2 of Errata v0.71 if you are in the Reserves you do your Service Career (at previous rank) instead of the current Career's Term if you roll a 2.

Thanks, guys. That puts it together. Roll continue. Then think about changing careers, but without telling the boss. Or your wife (although, Traveller doesn't really go there :o)
