yep - sorry honey, I lost our movie library in the sofa cushions...

For Traveller, any TL9+ device has unlimited storage. I think the T5 may even indicate that, I vaguely recall something to that effect. But imagine, you could have the Library of Congress in a DB sitting on your watch, err, hand computer.

The original tricorders from Star Trek had library disks. The hero versions of the tricorders could actually release the one to the far right (there was a lever to release it; the others were simply a rolled aluminum tube with grooves cut in to appear to be individual disks). Too bad we never actually saw them get used, but the potential was there (until the props master finally glued them in, apparently they kept falling out and getting lost)

You might be able to physically have practically unlimited storage but do you really think marketing and sales is going to let that one on the store shelves?

and if they are read only, then for new stuff you would have to get the latest.

and 11,000 worlds...well, there's always a new market.

that's also the reason there's such a big negative push for universal cell phone chargers from the phone makers: various companies make a lot of money selling these things, and if there was only a standard connection, there would be a lot less competition. The end users (us) want a standard, the companies selling them obviously don't.
