Protected?

Daddicus

On page 62 (Marines) there's a reference to the Protected branch. What is Protected?

There's also a Protected under the DM by branch column of the table to the right. Is that the same?

62 is Soldier, 66 is Marine, but both have them. I am guessing those are the Battledress equipped forces, along with Marine Commando?

I was on the wrong page, but the question is the same.

Yep, both services have them. The DM column affects what what operation you are on in any particular year of service, you'll note that Protected in Soldiers is in combat fully 50% of the time, as is Commando in the Marines.

Could it be the equivalent to Protected Forces (IIRC described a those trained to operate in hostile environements) in CT:LBB4/MT?

BD or Combat armor. Possibly mixture.

As I understand it, it does refer to Protected Forces. Forces specially trained, equipped and organized for hostile (or non Terran standard) environments.

It couldn't refer simply to Dress and Armor otherwise all troops in the Infantry Branch would be disadvantaged from wearing either, or in other words, the Infantry Branch would be assumed to be Combat Environment Suit users only.

Notice that Protected Branch appears twice for Soldier and once for Marine.

This might mean that the Protected Branch in the Army is larger than the same in the Marines, or that it's easier to get into.

For the OTU that makes sense, because the Marines are already specialists in hostile environments i.e. space. So their Protected Branch would be smaller and/or more specialized than that of the Army.

ProFor.

McPerth and Reban have the right of it. Damned if I remember where I found it, but that is what I ended up with for them too.

My ProFor (Protected Forces) are Zero-G Combat trained in asteroid belts and train on BigWorlds for both High Grav and Hostile Environment.

If you just do a little survey of the various Armours/Dress/Suits/Units available via ArmorMaker you can see that there are:

Cold
Combat Environment
Drop
Hazmat
Hostile Environment
Hot
Vacc

All of the above say to me "hazardous environments" and might form the basic equipment of Protected Forces. The use of Units might be useful to Protected Forces on high gravity worlds. I'd also see them as using ATVs (and other vehicles) with the double sealed option from VehicleMaker that means the vehicle is equipped with an airlock.

Protected Forces Characters might focus on skills such as High-G, Hostile Environment, Vacc suit and Zero-G alongside the Soldier Skills.

Purely IMTU i put Drop Troops in the "Protected Forces" category for my Imperial Army. Jumping out of a ship or using a drop capsule for atmospheric re-entry counts as special training and hazardous environment. I use the Rapid Interface Battalion model from GT: Ground Forces which are essentially Light Infantry but I use the Travellers Digest Drop Regiment model from the Imperial Guard article so its a mixed unit of three light infantry battalions, a grav tank battalion and an artillery battalion (I'm a bit inspired by the Russian airborne forces which are also a separate branch). So my Drop Troops Regiments span the Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery Branches plus have specialist training and environmental abilities. Protected Forces also include special troops raised for specific environmental challenges such as Rad Worlds, Space Habitats, unusual atmospheres etc.

IMTU Protected forces in the Imperial Marines are that bit more specialized because all Marines can fit the "Assault from Space" model that Army Drop Troops do, but Marines put more emphasis on the ability to function in zero-g when used as ships troops and operations in vacuum when used in boarding actions. So Marine Protected Forces are those who routinely function inside and outside ships and space habitats.

We have specialized troops expected to operate in unusual environments, a thermal layer in the uniform may resolve the issues for jungles and mountains, but less so in toxic soups or in an abandoned (maybe) hulk that just appears out of nowhere from the warp.

[...] a thermal layer in the uniform may [suffice] for jungles and mountains, but less so in [...] an abandoned (maybe) hulk that just appears out of nowhere from the warp.

And of course the Space Hulk is one of my favorite scenarios.

Does this Space Hulk have a green skin and have a purple stripe around it?

If so, does it go around SMASH!ing things?
