Just a thought I had - let's gather together the ships that different people have designed at different TLs. A thread for each TL, and a post for each ship. They can then act as a resource for other players / referees, who need to rustle up a few ship encounters with unfamiliar vessel types, but haven't the time to design them from scratch.

(For the record, in my TU, an SDB is under 1999 dT; the heavies are built around a missile bay. I don't see a point in getting bigger when it just puts all your eggs in the one basket for the spinal to smash. A non-jump craft big enough to mount a spinal weapon is a monitor if part of the system defenses.)

COMMENT
This SDB is designed around the concept of the smallest craft that can carry a missile battery and a full spread of secondary batteries to absorb hits, thus putting as many armored and evading bays into space as the credit will permit. In this instance, that left a bit of room left over for a 20 dT armored scout fighter, useful for peeking up over the cloudtops while the SDB remains deep in the gas giant, scouting ahead, and so forth.

COMMENTS
A scout fighter is a small fighter with a small craft stateroom for extended duration flight, allowing the fighter to move independently through the system to scout. The craft is an effective long-range commerce raider but ineffective against warships, although its agility and heavy armor might sometimes buy enough time to escape by diving into a nearby atmosphere.

COMMENTS
At TL11, the largest possible ship is size P, up to 74,999 dTons. Larger isn't necessarily better as, in this instance, it means a higher cost per ship, therefore fewer ships for the buck. This class carries the largest particle beam spinal available at this tech level, with the PA-K. At 51,000 dT, it appears to be the smallest at this tech level capable of carrying this large a particle beam, 6G agility, reasonable defensive weapons and decent (factor 6) armor, sufficient to protect crew from particle beam radiation.

It is possible to make it larger, even adding a couple of layers of armor but that results in up to a third fewer ships with only marginal improvement in individual combat performance.

COMMENTS

This class is the lowest tech level class to carry a meson spinal, with the Meson A. At 54,000 dT, it appears to be the smallest at this tech level capable of carrying a spinal meson, 6G agility, reasonable defensive weapons and decent (factor 6) armor, sufficient to protect crew from particle beam radiation.

It is possible to make it larger, but that results in up to 30% fewer ships with only marginal improvement in individual combat performance.

This class' meson weapon can be quite deadly, especially with the absence of meson screens, but the absence of nuclear dampers at this tech level makes the class vulnerable to nuclear missiles, and the tech level limit on armor makes it difficult to mount sufficient armor to offset that vulnerability. The class relies instead on agility to limit damaging hits. The class relies on configuration and agility to defend it from inbound meson fire.
