any groups in sacramento ca who actualy plays
ANY type of traveller? any ONE person who is
interested?? e-mail me. we could talk, we could possiably start a group

Just finished play testing the T20 rules. We plan another group of sessions this summer around some events that happended during that play test. Problem is we are in Anchorage, Alasks.

The T20 rules are still being playtested? Well that's a bummer. I thought the book was about to come out. Shows what I know.

I'm in north Texas (Denton). Any groups around here that I could sit in on? I'm trying to find a new game and sitting in on a session is one really quick way to get an opinion.

i am going to try to start a group in sacramento, ca. there is a game store called
"great Escape Games" in town ther in the yellow page here. i am going to post notices at all game stores and hobby shops and and war gaming shops. we will see what happens.
great escape games has a lot of tables and space which they said we could use. i will really make a true effort to get something going here - i will get back to you all with a report. wish me luck!!!

Well, our playtesting group is still running the campaign with the playtest rules. The book's gone to editing, but we figured we're having so much fun why stop.

I've put together 2 large gaming groups in the last 4 years (had to move and start from scratch once.) I have a few pieces of advice.

1) Pick a day and time and stick to it. If even 1 person shows up, play the game. This saves you endless headaches on scheduling and gets the players in the habit of scheduling around you if they really want to play.

2) Make up a batch of pre-generated characters and, if you're playing in a game store, ask anyone who's hanging around if they want to play. This is really key and is the principal strength of playing at a game store.

3) If it looks like you have a lot of 30-something married men, consider scheduling the game every other week. Once a week can be too much of a commitment and once a month is more like a special occasion than a regular thing.

4) If you recognize the "GM itch" in some of your players, offer to let anyone GM a session or two now and again. It will help spread a little good will and give you a chance to play in your own campaign.

5) I've had a lot of luck recruiting players on Internet "player databases" give them a try.

6) If you still have trouble finding players, try starting a D&D campaign, and then switch over to Traveller once you feel you have a solid group of players. There are a lot of D&D players out there who are more likely to try something new with a GM they know then are likely to try a new game and a new group simultaneously.

Like I said, I put together 2 groups of 6-10 players withing a 4 year period and those are the rules I used and lessons I learned while doing it.

good call tj.

Those are all great pointers Dr. Skull. I'm such an elitist gamer that the thought of putting together a new crew makes me want to give the whole thing up. I'm on a college campus though, so having access to gamers isn't the problem....it's having access to gamers that aren't complete nim-rods.

Well, there have been times when I've run into my share of nim-rods too. But, I've found that for a GM to have fun he really only needs 1-2 good players (let's call them Kirk and Spock) and can consider the rest of the nimrods as "red shirts" there to catch bullets.

"Captain I think I found something...ack....gurgle"

I've never actually treated the dead weight players like red shirts but it might move things along more quickly

So long as the deadweights don't insist of discussing last night's Xena loudly and across the table in front of whomever's actually trying to play.

Sounds like you've had some pretty bad ones MJD.

My groups are usually very small because I give people like that the ol' boot.

DUDE! Why do all that work? Just play GURPS: Traveller. It's the same thing - points-based character creation, skill-based conflict resolution with skills based on your stats and a 3D6 game engine. Toss in a copy of the GURPS Character Builder character creation software and making the characters is a snap. Don't want that? The GURPS Character Assistant shareware program is just as good.

Plus, all the "stuff" is already done: vehicles, equipment, weapons, armor. No need to convert all that stuff over.

And the GURPS: Traveller main book has a chapter on converting Classic Traveller characters to GURPS characters.

Couldn't be simpler.

I left a player group becuase of the cross-chat and the general "turn up and not really bother playing but get in the way of those who want to" attitude of some players. I'd come late to this group, which was dominated (excessively strong word but you know what I mean) by the usual ref. He was more willing than I to carry on despite the crap, and I'm not very tolerant. I baled.

Six months later, so did he. I'd got together with some other players and now we have the better ones of the original group (and the two of us share 99% of reffing) as well. It works, since it's a group founded on a mutual feeling of pissed-off-with-deadweights....

Because I like HERO....and have since its first edition, WAY WAY back in '87....

GURPS always felt like 'hero-lite'....
