pick a classic tune

Pwyll

SOC-12
we have tunes now that have been around for a long time... has anyone ever wondered if the songs of the last century or so mightn't be the classics of the future? i do...

what would be your pick for a future classic?

Ooops

I forgot a good one, Bob Dylan--"Like a Rollin' Stone" (Even named a little fan mag after it)

Pappy

Well what could be more appropriate than Travellin' Man by Tommy Hunter :D

Not to be confused with the same titles by Lynyrd Skynyrd or Mos Def.

The lyrics in case they are hard to make out...

I am a travellin' man
Followin' the breeze
Travellin' here, travellin' there
Gathering memories

So let me, wander
Let me wander all my life away
Just travellin' on my way...

And from a little TNE PBEM game I was part of once upon a time...

Poppa was my character's tacnet id and he was the Captain of the ship Terpsichore outbound from the water world of Aubaine on her maiden flight...

Thinking of the good friends well met there

As the jump grid starts tracing Poppa opens the crew comm and
speaks.

"We're coming to the edge,
running on the water,
coming through the fog,
your sons and daughters.

We the great and small
stand on a star
and blaze a trail of desire
through the dark'ning dawn."

...and the void rips open with a flash and the ship is gone.

Poppa continues, "I came across those words in an ancient
Terran song I found at auction shortly after I arrived here. They
kind of struck a chord for me with the feeling I was getting of
what the RC is about and they seem a good thought to launch
this crew and ship on. Carry on."

The lyrics if you're wondering are from Let the River Run by Carly
Simon, and Poppa's explanation is my own RL reason too. Ya
know I think he's not so much a traditionalist as a romantic :D

There're a number of Yello tunes I'd push, but they seem to be a niche market. I'd say "Flag," "Squeeze Please*," and the popular "Oh, Yeah." (Chik, chika chika.)

*Squeeze, Please, Nockin' About
Nonsense, that's the Way Out.

'Highway To Hell' is an interesting choice but I would have gone with 'Back In Black' myself if picking from the AC/DC catelog.

How about:

The Oscar Meyer Weiner Song
The theme from Gilligan's Island

Oh well, maybe just Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Coming"?

"Stranded" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Stranded in Iowa
Stranded in Iowa
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I can't keep my thoughts out of sight
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I need to feel the stars sleep by at night
I'm stranded all night, stranded all right

Stranded in Iowa
Stranded in Iowa
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I can't keep my thoughts out of sight
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I need to feel the stars sleep by at night
I'm stranded all night, stranded all right

Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
Hotel Echo, this is Mike November
I can hear your call
Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
Hotel Echo, this is Charlie Delta
I can feel the fear
Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
[repeat to fade]

Stranded in Iowa
Stranded in Iowa
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I can't keep my thoughts out of sight
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I need to feel the stars sleep by at night
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I can't keep my thoughts out of sight
Better get the Breakdown squad out
Get me rolling on
'Cause I need to feel the stars sleep by at night
I'm stranded all night, stranded all right

Mayday, this is Echo Hotel
[repeat to fade]

"Five Miles Out" by Mike Oldfield

falling, falling

What do you do when your falling you've got 30 degrees and your
stalling out
And its 24 miles to the beacon there's a crack in the sky and the
warnings out

Don't take that dive again
Push through that band of rain

Five miles out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out
Your number 1 anticipating you

Climbing out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out
Your number 1 anticipating you

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday
Calling all stations
This is Golf Mike Oscar Victor Juliet
IMC CU.NIMB.ICING
In great difficulty
Over

The traffic controller is calling
Victor Juliet your identity
I have lost in the violet storm
Communicate or squalk emergency

Don't take that dive again
Push through that band of rain

Lost in Static 18
And the storm is closing in now
Automatic 18 - Got to push through - Trapped in living hell

Your a prisoner of the dark sky
The propeller blades are still
And the evil eye of the hurricane's
Coming in now for the kill

Our hope's with you - Rider in the blue

Welcome's waiting, We're anticipating
You'll be celebrating, when you're down, and breaking

Climbing out - climbing climbing
Five miles out - climbing climbing

Five miles out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out
Climbing Climbing

Five miles out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out
Climbing Climbing

Climbing out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out
Climbing Climbing

Five miles out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out
Climbing Climbing

Climbing out
Just hold your heading true
Got to get your finest out

The whole track list from Yello's "Claro Que Si," especially "Daily Disco" and "The Evening's Young."

There needs to be a Leonard Cohen tune in here somewhere. I vote for "Everybody Knows" by Leonard Cohen.
