Pensions...Retire on 4,000Cr. a year?

On the mercenary scale, it's looking like a 4-star would get Cr2800/mo (using the same progression as shown for the rest of the officers), which implies actives probably getting about Cr1400/month base, plus room, board, special assignment pays, command bonus, yada yada...
Why not Cr2800/month plus room and board, with the rest covered by his 14 shares in the unit's profits?

The salary of a private does not seem to include room and board (since that would be under subsistence living), so why should a general's pay include it?

I never said it didn't - but you're the one fixating on living expenses.

Sorry, I thought you did. Who are the actives you talk about, then? The ones getting Cr1400/month plus room and board and whatnot?

If by "fixated" you mean that I see a significant difference between getting X credits plus room and board and getting X credits from of which room and board is deducted, then I guess I'm fixated.

The figures from price of long-term subsistence. On p. 109 of TTB, but it's in the original LBBs too somewhere.

Thanks, I'll have a look on my PDF.

I've had the 1981 print of the LBBs for decades, and don't remember seeing that, I'll have to look.

Note that it's page 19...

Subsistence on a Long Term Basis: In situations where time passes quickly, personal survival or subsistence costs can be assumed to be the values given below:
Starvation Level: bare minimum of food, Cr60 per month; dismal lodging, Cr60 per month.
Subsistence Level: reasonable food, Cr120 per month; acceptable lodging, Cr180 per month.
Ordinary Level: good food, Cr200 per month; good lodging, Cr200 per month.
High Living: excellent food, Cr600 per month; excellent accomodations, Cr300 per month.
Starships: Passengers and crewmembers have their food
and lodging provided, with costs covered by the life support
costs necessary for operation of the ship.

As for what's doubling the pay - crewmen aboard ship count their passage as life support - so that's not it.

However, it's not uncommon for sea pay to be between 10% and 50%. (Currently, it's about 5% for the USN, going up to about 10% at 3 years continuous sea duty - and that not all sea duty is actually underweigh). Separation Pay is a fixed bonus currently, and it's $250 -which would be about Cr64 (using the US BLS CPI based calculator

Shows you how much (or little) we cared to play accountant-PCs (or to turn Traveller into Paybooks & Balance Sheets like some do). ;)

I've one player that, unless prevented, turns every merchant game into accounting 101.

He's not played in any of the Merc Unit games I've run.

So your saying you have missed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play Logistics & Quartermasters. :)
As a non-wargamer ... almost every wargame that I have been exposed to feels a lot like Logistics & Quartermasters.

I prefer RPGs where I can play a 'Big Darn Hero' (or at least someone sort of interesting).

That said, becoming 'filthy rich beyond all normal bounds of avarice', does have a long tradition stretching back at least as far as Monopoly. ;)

I ran a BT Merc game back in the 80's...
And I ran a Mercs game around 1988-89. Both of which had L&Q aspects.

Oh, and I ran a Megacorp BoD game in '91 - that was almost pure L&Q, as most of the enterprises were merc units and supply chain being moved in-house.

It seems to me I've seen an article--I think maybe a Challenge article (but maybe not--that discussed the value of an Imperial Credit. I remember it being valued at more than a buck but less than $5 or $10.

Does that ring anybody's bells?

In the 90's, the then-current US$ was about 1/3 the value of the 1977 US$.

I've looked at a number of the issues for this before on the boards.

The CT/Striker numbers look like 1977 US$. The TCS numbers look like 1980-'83 or so US Incomes.
