PCGen

I too would like to see T20 added to the PCGEN list of D20 games. For those who don't know, PCGEN is JAVA based client for "managing" D20 characters. Currently it supports D&D (of course), Deadlands, Star Wars, and SpyCraft(?).

Don't know what it takes for the PCGEN folks to embrace T20, but an email from one of you ancient types might be a good start. :) That's my two cents worth...

I'd like to add my endoresement as well. PCGEN is the best and brightest of the D20 Character Management softwares I've seen. And its free. And they update it regularly (almost too often) to keep it up to date with the latest D20 source material. And its for Wintel AND Mac platforms.

There simply isn't a downside - unless Quik-Link was already planning on some kind of character generation/management software (an extension of GRiP maybe). If so, I'd seriously consider changing your plans and allowing PCGen to do it for you - look at how fast WoTC is killing/cutting back on their eTools product (and that's after spending a lot of $$$ and time on it with Fluid).

The reason - PCGen is GOOD and its FREE. There isn't any reason why gamers will shell out their hard earned money for something when there is a quality product they can download for FREE.

Just another 0.02Cr from someone else.

Personally, the Merchant in me would not allow the project to continue, had I been a Hasbro bean counter, especially after hearing things like scanning miniatures and recording sound bites for the online tool feature of then Master Tools software, while they have not completed the tabletop tool features. I also would fire the Wizards' project leader for shifting the Fluid developer's task to make MT an online game.

But the project still continued, under a different leadership (then Ryan Dancey) who has a pragmatic, business mindset and likes to get things done. He salvaged what he can from the project, set aside any online tool features and get back-to-basic (the original objective is to make an electronic aid to tabletop gaming), playtest it and tweak it, and sell the product at a low price, with expansions to follow.

After seeing what Fluid has done so far and with the promise of continued software support if Wizards should decide drop it in the future, I'm leaning toward getting e-Tools.

Fluid would also like to do business with other d20 publishers.

PCGen is one of the better tools,

...although I wish they would slow some of their 'updates' down.

They mess with the interface a bit too often for my liking, but their updates for available data, settings, et al, is rather solid in my opinion.

Plus anything that is above average quality and free just has to rock in my opinion.

Although I'm sure someone could make something specific to the T20 setting too and release it - it would just take some time, effort, and ability.

I would, but although I'm a professional geek, I couldn't program to save my hide.

I'd like to toss my .02Cr in here as well. I've been using PCGen for some time now, mostly for D&D but also for Star Wars and Dragonstar. Once you get the hang of it, it's great. There are a few companies that aren't giving it their full support, but with all the one's that are, it is a very useful resource.

I use PC GEN for Spycraft characters, and while it's far from perfect, it's pretty damn good. Clunky, though, and slow.

I agree with Stephen about the merits of PC Gen. I hope that T20 has charts for "Basic Thugs" or "Standard Techies" to make the Ref's job easier. Before e-tools and PC Gen stat blocks for D20 were hard work. Imagine the job in T20. I appreciete any help I can get.

I also would like to put in my 2cents.

Tho I would like to see T20 in PCGen, I believe that PCGen is having some trouble at this time. With the latest version 3.1 they have dropped alot of D20 systems. And from the rumor mill Wizards of the Coast demanded that they drop non-WOC products. Now on the website it said that they are changing the site and PCGen to be compliant with the OGL. What this could mean, is that some of the D20 systems may have to be dropped. And what the effect on PCGen is unknown. :(

WotC demanded that Source Forge make PCGen to be compliant with the OGL and use only material from the SRD, as far as material from WotC. This means that they had to drop Call of Chthulu and Star Wars, Oriental Adventures, Forgotten Realms, and, in general, most of the good stuff. However, this affects only material from WotC. All third party material is still on there. There is a *rumor* that WotC is willing to negotiate for the return of non-SRD material, but only after PCGen demonstrates compliance.

Of course, that doesn't mean it forbids users of PCGen to input the info from Wizards' other copyrighted products on their own. It will just be a tedious work.

Besides, other d20 publishers are endorsing support for PCGen, even allowing them limited use of their trademarks and copyright material (including OGC) to be included with the program or as an expansion file.

BTW, I have changed my view of PCGen. Clearly it is a better electronic tool than e-Tools, despite the lag in speed.

If you create a PC generator make sure it better than the D&D3rd ed because the Master tools or what ever they are calling them now , I have both copies, make me want to throw up a furrball.

Just thought I'd mention that PCGen 4.1.0 has come out, and is OGL-compliant. I don't use it, but I remembered seeing a press release about the new version.

to reply to the above mention of why i have two copies... the PC gen from Wotc came with the palyers handbook... the E-tools which was recently released...different versions both disappointing.

Well, the CharGen demo is based on the Player's Handbook data and a few of the DMG (you can equip character with magical items). This demo is free when you buy the Player's Handbook.

e-Tools however is a full-version character & creature generator incorporating all three core rulebooks' data. It also includes a house rule generator, magic item generator, and table generator. Depending on your retailer, the price range can be as low as $20 (online order) to $50.

What is lacking in both is an editor feature and a mapper.

After reading up on PCgen's requirements and capabilities, it would be possible to write the data files for T20 within it.

I'm trying just now to figure out just who to ask for permission to do it. Not worth it to me for just my own puirposes.

If I recall correctly at some point a few months ago Hunter was in talks with PcGen and even posted about it here.
