Paul Brunette

I've been reading the first Paul Brunette T:TNE novel and have been surprised to find that it's decently well written. Not high art mind you, but comparing to some of the other early Traveller novels by Swycaffer and Kemper it's pretty good.

What surprises me more is that he doesn't seem to have written anything else, anywhere, for either the Traveller RPG or in the world of novels.

Any idea of where he came from and where he went? Was "Paul Brunette" a pseudonym for someone else?

I have been trying to track down this guy myself, but it seems like it is a pseudonym.

The second book is also quite good, but it has a few typos and a little strange grammar some places. I also was irritated by the reference to tech levels, which is a meta game info and not a IRL info.

When I get around to it, I am going to write a review of the second book on my site (unless someone beats me to it). A review of the first is already present.

I have TLs as IISS designations IMTU, so they're 'real' - if a bit academic.

Fascinating. While I've never read anything by the other two so I can't compare them, I find Brunette's TNE novels painful to read.

Also do a quick search of the forums for "Brunette" and "Backwards Mask" as this topic has come up before so there may be some info there of interest.

Thanks for the heads up. I found it the most interesting that it appears the third book was written, with one person mentioning a manuscript appearing on eBay and another noting a copy of it on fanfiction.net (since removed).

Also, the plans in 2006 for FFE to commission a new third novel, that seems to have since fallen away.

Still curious who Paul Brunette was though.

The powers that know are busy at the moment...but it could be a pseudonmyn but he was also going to design a SF adventure for Pirate or something Press. That fell through but to my disappointment.

While a better game novel (because it was more consistant) with the OTU and he is a good writer...I still like Swycaffer's work as it was more of the structure of a Traveller adventure than what was a novel. Good fiction is usually a poor substitute for a good adventure. A good adventure usually makes poor fiction. IMHO

My mistake it was Gold Rush Games that was launching a Paul Brunette adventure...
