P/Prospecting Skill Results - Artifacts

Hi there,

On THB page 85, the results of the P/Prospecting skill, it lists the (increasing) value for Artifacts of varying ages. The value for the 1d10 million year old artefacts is listed as Cr 1d10x10, which is significantly lower than the previous catagory.

Is this correct, and for things like flint arrowheads fromt he first time round, or is it an error?

Thanks!

Shane

And another bump. Poor thread just can't seem to rest.

Ok, I'll take a stab at this one. Granted, I don't have my book handy, so....

The player in me feels that they left off the K or M before the Cr. :D

However, the GM in me feels that artifacts that age aren't worth much because the only people interested in buying them are museums, who are notoriously poor. Remember, artifacts of this age are Pre-Ancients, and unless you have some race that was around back then making indestructable things, most of these artifacts are going to be simple pointed rocks made by VERY primitive people. Not much else is going to survive that kind of time, except fossils, which have their own catagory.

But couldn't this arguement be used just as easily for artificacts from most of the other periods from the table?

If anything, I'd expect an artifact dating from before the Ancients to be worth a LOT. I'm not too familiar with OTU history, so I don't know if the Ancients were supposed to have developed in Charted Space or elsewhere, but such an artifact would possibly give insight to before/during the development of the Ancient's civilization (if it turned out being from their homeworld, or even an early colony) or what things were like on worlds where other civilizations were developing but ultimately failed (perhaps the Ancients found the competition for the title of "Ancients" not to their liking?).

And don't forget the b/millionaire CEOs, tri-d stars, etc that have money to burn; combine that with a need to collect things that noone else has, usually just so they can show-off at their next private party, and you've got a recipe for a simple pointed rock made by very primitive people being worth over a million credits. ;)

I'd say that there's an argument for at least occasionally having a Pre-Ancient artifact with a KCr or MCr value. After all, there was a T. Rex skeleton found in North Dakota sometime back that was valued at several million dollars as part of a court case.

And yes, museums are generally not all that wealthy -- but they have patrons who are, and who appreciate large tax deductions from donations of valuable things....
