New TravellerMap Info Graphics... Grrr

Grrr... First, I really liked the old infocards that popped up when you clicked on the link for a particular planet. It really irritated me that you couldn't print them since they were so pretty but...

The new ones? They're really clunky (drop-down arrows are kinda overmuch especially since they're not very friendly). They're pretty ugly.

AND... They're activated every-single-time I grab the map to scroll from one place to another (must be touching a system each time) and they're still not printable.

Thanks tons to whomever maintains and constantly improves the site. It's the #1 resource out there.

But I really dislike the new infocards.

Also, thanks for the feedback. The vast megacorporation behind the site declines to fund user testing so I end up just rolling out changes, getting feedback, and refining things. I have a few ideas already, such as adding a "print me!" link from the new "infocards" (good name) to the print-friendly sheet. I'll ponder ways to make dismissing the cards stickier. (Note that if you do minimize it, it will stay minimized, which keeps it mostly out of the way.)

I also love TravellerMap. It's an amazing resource.

One day, it would be really cool if it included the 1201 info as well. TNE forever!

Vast megacorporation. Love it, you gas bag!

I actually rather like the new infocards, but I agree that they need to stay out of the way when I want them to. But a link right on the infocard to the world data sheet and a print option right there would be handy.

It seems a little odd that the data card doesn't include the source info. I know it's still under the bottom header, but the data cards are so comprehensive that the omission is a bit glaring.

I like that the infocards can be used "in-game" (without RW source material) but I see your point. But it's a neat resource that could allow a GM to print them off and hand them to players or put in a book (ie. Ship's Computer).

As for different data, I definitely agree if we could get more on there. Some alt sets are already available. The Judge's Guild Ley Sector information is up and trailing from the main map (search "Ley Sector"). So alternate data sets can definitely be added. There is tons of room on the map so you just need to submit it.

Ha! I have definitively invented/defined a word! "Infocards"... I should get like an internet prize or something...

I added the printable link (expand/scroll down). I'll ponder including source/credits.

...

The world images are from a stock set used for the "candy" view; 11 images, one for each Hyd value plus Asteroid belt. They're scaled and (on a recent browser) tinted based on the primary star's spectrum (so worlds around K/M primaries are dim/red). If there is a "Sa" code you get a different background too (those are rare in the T5SS data as yet, but try Regina)

A handful of planets have "pre-renders" based on existing depictions of the world: Terra, Regina, Reference, and Depot (Corridor). Other pre-renders are easy to add if we can source the images.

Oh, and part of the reason the cards appear so frequently is that they show when a world is clicked, dragged or just centered. I'll work on the heuristics so the user gesture must be more deliberate.

I have found that even if I choose an "Empty Hex" to grab when I am dragging the map, infocards will still pop up (presumably because I moved a world at random across the "center" of the map while I was dragging). Perhaps disabling the feature that pops the infocard up for a world just being centered - (i.e. you need to deliberately click a world to see the card, possibly with the exception that it pops up automatically whenever you type and choose a world-name from the search box).

Oooooooh! I like those new little info cards. Very snazzy!

I know you have a "wish list" of things you want to add to the site, but is it something that you have viewable to the public, so we can see what you are working on and not waste your time asking you to add features you already thought of? :)

Or even better, a list that would allow people to vote for the features they wanted to um, help prioritize the list. Yeah, that's it. All to help you out. :D
