Stand off from 1000m and destroy it with an with FGMP-15 or other similar firepower.

And after some searching two small shine spots each with a symbol on it

With a magnifier, some faint scratches may be found.
They appear to be some sort of script, and when translated read "other end top - PTO"

Exactly the same scratches are found at either end of the object, on both sides.

Is it not wonderful that carbon fiber is X-Ray transparent? What would an X-Ray reveal? Of course this procedure is done by remote control in deep space at a range of at least 1000 Km.

That would be a medical imaging X-Ray, borrowed from a local hospital, with a small bribe to the appropriate doctor.
An X-Ray laser would be a wonderful way to convert the carbon composite box into vapor, along with any contents. Not the best result hoped for.

:D :D ....

All excellent replies. Does it really matter what's inside... just think of the hours the party would spend trying to work it out.

Oh, and upon x-raying the item, one realises that inside the outer casing is an inner casing which reflects x-ray, and all other imaging technology........

(personally, I'd probably fill it with completely with something like travel brochures or something. Thus gaining the poor old PC's nothing, but leaving them to explain on delivery just why the casing etc etc has been tampered with...

Many years ago, my players found an Ancient antimatter battery (although they didn't know what it was).

One guy tried pressing the two gold studs on the end...

Bright flash, smoking boots, blank character sheet...

When one of the crew wipes a bit of dust away, there's a sign that says:

"Enter box to leave the Asylum."

Ok, I stole the idea from 'So Long And Thanks For All The Fish'.

Um, let's remember our fundamentals, Space Cadets.

First order of business: determine if the box is, you know, radioactive....

It's a wonder you guys ever survived CharGen... :smirk:

Ok, here's a similar one that I used a few years ago:

A secure crate with Naval markings, about 20+ years old. It has an electronic system needing to be bypassed, but as it's 20 years old, an Intrusion based PC should get some decent bonuses to open it. Once done, a small screen merely says "Are you sure? (Y/N)". Entering Y opens the box, which drops out a quantity of greyish dust. The dust is actually experimental nano-constructors, and will immediately start to convert surrounding materials into whatever they need, to enbale them to construct - whatever you want the box to build...

My PCs came across a pile of these boxes recovered by some scavengers from a Naval dumping ground. They were in the hold of a ship, floating with no crew, and just a 1 m diameter clean hole through the hull (one side only)...

They got to the Y/N part and bottled out (as they didn't know what it did). They later sold them as "recovered goods" back to the Navy via a contact.
Well, sold some of them back.
