My T5 Review

I am just...gobsmacked...that Marc didn't allow at least organizational input to make it more polished.

Better organization would have done nothing to his idea and would have made his Grand Work more available to the non grognard.

I don't think it's that straightforward. Or maybe it is. Anyhow, it is what it is.

Regardless, the low-hanging fruit, the most productive response I can make to Chuck's fair review, is to provide examples, walkthroughs, and plenty of them, to paint a picture of the processes.

Any examples provided would prove quite helpful! While there are several ship builds scattered throughout the T5 forum, it would be nice to see a basic run through of character creation, the various systems and makers in separate threads to better illustrate how things work for those interested.

Ask and ye shall receive. I posted a chargen example of Captain Jamison last night, and have already gotten some corrective feedback. Thanks to Peter, Murdoc, and Wil!

And today I posted a very short example on building the Body Pistol, in support of another PDF with a list of Classic Traveller guns and armor I had ported. Those are sans examples. It would be useful to go thru a couple -- once you've seen a few good ones, you've seen them all.

The next things I'd like to do, in order of likely easiness, are:
  • a vehicle walk-thru (there's one from one of Andrew Boulton's videos that I saw and HAD TO DESIGN. I think that'll be the one to walk through),
  • a BeastMaker walk-thru (got one in mind, a riding beast I used in a game this winter),
  • a sophont "build" walk-thru (got one in mind, the near-extinct sophonts from Chamax),
  • and a couple of Robots (I have many ideas here).

I have played various Traveller iterations for well over 20 years off and on), and had, in fact, offered nothing during the beta. I simply followed it from the outside

I was the same way. After "joining" the Traveller 5 beta, I saw right away that T5 was Marc Miller's personal project showing us what his own Traveller universe would look like. So beta members would say what they would do in their own Traveller universe, wondering how or if the two universes would jive together.

Marc didn't post back in the forum in response to our questions about the game. So T5 mostly remained an unfinished black box that we could see the insides of, but just couldn't change anything with it, or know how the final black box would operate.

I do remember reading somewhere about the task mechanic getting a complete over-haul just before the game was sent to presses (and beta members received a finalized PDF update). So somebody convinced somebody the mechanic needed changing. Or Marc decided on his own to change it.

All we knew was that a new black box was placed on the table for us to look inside of. That's when a lot of beta members knew that the black box was not a game box, but a storage box. Some would call it a toolbox.

I've got my accessible, highly playable version of the game already - when I got Mongoose Traveller. I have also got my classic Traveller, which is playable with house-rules, and gives a sense of the history of the game.

I'm not buying T5 with any expectation other than it being Marc Miller's vision - warts and all. Consequently, it's hard for me to be too wound up about it's contents or sympathetic to opprobrium from gamers upon it's release.

Well I finally got my T5 tome and I am extremely happy with it so far. I like the Nobility card, and the T5 CD in it's case. Even the way the product was shipped to me was steller.

A job very well done Marc!!!

BTW signing the book as himself and Stephon was awesome as well too!!! Very well worth the price for the product and yes I will buy to add to my collection anything else that is made for the system. It is the little things that makes everything much more fantastic!
