but it has certainly happened historically (senior Lieutenant at Rourke's Drift, a German Captain commanding the defence of Halfaya pass in 1941 for example. Also when Rommel disappeared during the battle of Gazala, a Colonel Gause took command and issued orders to senior Italian and German officers.
I would therefore postulate it is likely to continue in the future.
Since the bulk of the world's population is Chinese, how about Mandarin for little 'f' instead?
