I wanted another terrorist group to use as bad guys in my campaigns. Someone other than the Ine Givar. Thought I’d share:
The One Life Movement (OLM) is a loose affiliation of groups based on a common quasi-religious viewpoint: Everyone is born with an immortal soul which passes into the afterlife at the point of death. However, suspended animation (whether by cold berth, chill birth, or some other mechanism) is a form of death. Therefore a person travelling by low passage, for example, looses their soul when they are frozen and a soulless creature is revived at the other end. In other words the act of freezing someone in a cold berth is an act of murder.
There are degrees to which OLM supporters believes this. Many are just uncomfortable with the practice of cold berths and lobby their political representatives (on worlds that have such things) to impose restrictions in their jurisdictions (usually unsuccessfully). Some will hang around starports and startowns handing out leaflets. But there are a few who are more extremist. Acts of vandalism may be carried out that target cold berth manufacturers or hospital cryo-wards. Recently, doctors specialising in cryo-revival and their families have been harassed (and occasionally killed) by fringe OLM groups.
Some religious communities shun and ostracise those who have been through suspended animation, even holding funerals despite that person still walking around. They refer to such people as soulless monsters and abominations ... and suicide is sometimes encouraged as a ‘solution’.
Despite the widespread occurrence of OLM groups total membership is relatively small, and dangerous fringe groups are only a subset.
