Mindflayer-like Aliens?

Maybe they are humans who treated themselves with a retro-virus?

Hans

Retrovirus: An RNA virus (a virus composed not of DNA but of RNA). Retroviruses have an enzyme called reverse transcriptase that gives them the unique property of transcribing RNA (their RNA) into DNA. The retroviral DNA can then integrate into the chromosomal DNA of the host cell to be expressed there. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS, is a retrovirus.

So people with AIDS turn into mind flayers in your world? Very interesting.

Perhaps another way to go would be to play up the psionic/gruesome horror aspect of the mindflayer, not the octopus head. Imagine a group of Zhodani special ops, whose ship crashed years ago on a sparsely populated world outside the Consulate. They were mostly telepaths, and perhaps not the most stable bunch to begin with. Over the years the strain of hiding, guilt over the assasinations they performed in their missions, combined with being away from the corrective, moderating influence of Zhodani society, has driven them all quite mad.

They have come to believe that consuming the brains of sentients will augment their own psionic powers, adding whatever small latent psionic potential their victims might have had to their own. To grow in strength, they must consume many, many brains from the deadheads who exist to serve and sustain them. Now they live a furtive, secret existance hidden in caverns, one part mindflayer, one part Hannibal Lector, one part Seany Bean.

hmm... Mongoose's Babylon 5 setting for their version of Traveller has the Pak'ma'ra: Cthuloid but smelly, lazy and disliked by anyone else (but maybe that's just a heavy case of value dissonance)
from their Wikipage: "The pak'ma'ra believe themselves a chosen and superior people, and their ability to consume any other of the sentient species is a sign of this."
on the other hand: in the series they are some of the good guys

There is no need to justify the existence of carnivores in the Traveller universe. It is just that these particular carnivores have a particular dietary preference that would repulse most other sentients.

I thought of the Doctor Who Ood at first. Then I read this and thought of Doctor Zoidberg from Futurama. ;)

I have an idea this is a little far fetched but how about another race of humans on another planet. They are incredibly powerful psions like Zohadini but war to them is purely psionic. Massive psionic battles taking place all over the world. This caused mutations since they would be assulted drugged with special and returned to battle. Slowly the constant blasts would cause them to become physically weak, mentally insane, and psionically GODS. No technoligy is necisarry anymore the psionic masters of the community would transport their ships of pure energy from sector to sector, feeding on brains to satisfy their need for more power and appearing as creatures of nightmare to other races. Every "ship" would have a deposit of psionic power as fuel (such as kyhadara crystals from Starcraft) and a master to control it, to produce the forcefield ship and teleport it from world to world. The soldiers would fight with physical psionic blasts and armor of force.

This is probably really weird but woulden't it look AWESOME!

Simple enough -

The ancients had tried to give human slaves more physic ability, and while they did have better abilities, the octopus head and desire to eat brains and flesh of intelligent life was a deal killer, so Grandfather/one if his kids flattened the base (or so they thought) and went elsewhere.

300,000 years later the party gets all excited about finding a little ancient base, so far undiscovered. they awaken a chamber full of the Octomen, and have to race to the reactor, overload it, and get out, and they see all the beautiful tech go up in a fusion boom perhaps with just one or two item they could grab on the way.

Before you think I am crazy, the octopuses are thought to be a 2nd line uplift species, and several games have uplifted Octopuses, thus it is not too far to have a cross. :smirk::smirk:

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure if there's anything left of me
.....
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating out our brains
