MetaPlot--Beyond the Ancients

Interesting.
Just because we learned the Secret of the Ancients, I didn't think the Marches ceased to be of use. The way I see it, the Ancients metaplot was a metaplot and not the metaplot. Someone else mentioned Aslan incursions; how about increased Vargr piracy along the Imperial/Extents border? Major megacorporate intrigue? A star going nova?

Last, here's some food for thought: Do you need a metaplot?

i agree with vargas . a metaplot is great but not necessary .
also , just because we know the secret of the ancients doesn't mean they are finished ...

.........random thoughts......

1)there is still lots of ancient technology lying around . who knows what it does .

2) who is to say what grandfather will do in the future - he has isloated himself to persue research - what does he discover ? maybe he needs to emerge to test it .

3) did one of his chilldren manage to breed and keep it secret from him ?

4) as i understand , he overlooked one way in to his p.u. - thats how your character got in . there may be others . his disciples in there may want to come out .

5) the ancients theme was only in a few of 24 official adventures - there is lots of other stuff to do .

6) anyway , when you collect a particular set of coyns and assemble them on a certain chirper world something VERY alarming happens.....

7) what else did the imperium cover up in the psionic supressions ?

8 ) what do the zhos know ?

9) anyway the guy in the p.u. was really one of the children with delusions of grand(father)eur .

etc........................

To be honest in all the years I have played and ran traveller the ancients have never came up. with all the adventure to be had through trading/piracy, or just taking on odd jobs for mega corps or what not the issue of the ancients just never came up.

Somehow I can't see all "the Ancients" have accomplished boiling down to one guy hiding in a pocket universe. Certain aspects of that plot line have been done before. I've not found them satisfying as a story line, much less convincing in terms of suspension of disbelief. Bova is only a possible exception as he has yet to publish the next in the series (after clearly laying the groundwork for another far-future installment).

IMTU, they didn't boil down to one in a pocket... several "Children" of Grandfather cloned themselves, and hid in their OWN pocket universes... leaving dead clones to prove that they had died...

In your respective TU's, the question you must ask is, "was Grandfather the first?". The Ancients only inhabited a small portion of the Milky Way, leaving plenty of room for the First Ones, the Elders, the Ascended, the Lesser Gods, the Immortals, et al. Whatever your heart desires.

Surely, Grandfather's activities have caught the attention of someone who is just arriving in our section of the galaxy.

Afterall, the Secret of the Ancients boiled down to the fact the most insignificant race in Chartered Space...the Droyne & Chirpers are the decendant of the most powerful.

I would rather delve into the uncovering the Secrets of the Ancient Civilizations as I have always fought for a plurality of civilizations at the time of Antiquity.

Using other parts of the Galaxy and what of other Galaxies certainly Travellers need not fear an invasion from Andromeda soon but certainly what may be found from the Pegues explorations would be of interest.

Furthermore, the Imperium has no idea of what the Zhodani have been doing. Maybe the Empress Wave is going reveal more but there is a possibility that we are going to see also the tech level of Traveller jump as we develop further the concept of the 4th Imperium and what will it encounter?

Didja ever consider several Ancient races, like...

- Goua'uld, from the "Stargate" series?
- "Grandfather" Cthulhu, progenitor of all Illithids (AD&D Mindflayers)?
- The beings who created our universe as a vast metaphysics experiment, a la the "Rama" series by Arthur C. Clarke?
- Saurians, some of whom became stranded on Earth several million years ago and devolved into dinosaurs?
- Tides of Humaniti, cyclically rising to dominance and falling back into a primitive state?
- It's all the biggest Hiver Manipulation ever undertaken?

Not to mention all of the "Old Ones" races from Babylon 5, the Vorlons and the Shadows etc. ;) , then there are the other four elder races from Stargate plus the gatebuilders themselves.

I've been thinking about a couple of clues that I could throw into a game to make the players start to wonder if there may be more to the Ancients than what they know about Grandfather and the Droyne (which are themselves facts only known to a few PCs and any crackpot who believes their insane story ;) )

I'm going to slowly introduce that there were many primordial races pre-dating Grandfather. As to whether any of them are still around...

IMTU, the "Precursors" filled the niche of the "Old Ones" in Star Trek... they seeded the needed prebiotics to insure compatability with their descendants. What they didn't realize is that they bread their own doom... some of those worlds developed rapidly, and when they stopped in, they picked up a plague. 4 billion years later... Grandfather arises. 300000 years later arise the various other majors.
