Meson gun vs PA

This was a running argument during our campaigns. Which was better? Particle accelerators had a better chance to hit, but Meson guns did more damage. I am talking AZH/High Guard rules.

I personally like PA's, but am also very fond of the Meson gun.

What say you?
 
I tend towards mesons myself. Primarily because they have extensive ortillery use. And threat of Imperial Meson Fire keeps PC's in line. Canonically, a HG meson will turn to dust any solid structure in a diameter based on the URL value of the meson. This is the MT Danger space. It is 15m x URL. So an A meson is 150m diameter sphere of death! Everything dies, smooth ground becomes rough, all structures and vehicles are destroyed.

That being said, Striker also says clearly that meson guns MAY reduce their burst area.

In short, most surface 'Break the nail" (but not "take the nail") strikes can be done adequately by any cruiser with a type A meson... deniability, however, goes way down.

Also, take Aramis/Aramis/Spinward Marches as an example. The city is underground... deeply so. Imperial Navy Meson guns could easily take out the city if it became necessary... From Orbit, no marines needed. By digging up from the cieling, 150m at a chunk, 20 shots should have everyone dead or dying.

Truly, this is why IMTU, meson guns are the most controlled weapons in the imperium; unlicensed possesion is high treason, followed by the impies killing you with one... slowly.

But hey, think of the medical spinoffs... a 2cm meson beam could neatly kill off tumors.

Depends how you look at it. Meson guns certainly do more damage when they hit, they're rather sensative to configeration and meson screens. The big PAs on the other hand hit better, slice through anything and are smaller, cheaper and use less energy.

I like to use a mix, have a fair number of middling meson guns (factors E to J) around to discourage any monster ships and use the big PAs (factor G and up) to smash the other fleet. Add on lots of Nuke Missile bays to sandpaper the opponent and you've got a winner.
