Memory Manipulation

After Memory Alpha and that Philip K Dick's Paycheck (IIRC) what use do you use of selective memory wiping? I am beginning to toy with the idea for my corporate campaign (a la Paycheck).

If you include something like that, I think you'd have to include force-feed learning in schools, too. Things like Perfect Memory, and Lightning Deduction feats come to mind. And that completely throws off the skills aquirement. If you can remember anything, or figure out anything, what's the use of skill points?

But as far as altering or erasing someone's memory, that can be done by simple hypnosis, which I would think would have been analyzed completely in the ultra-high tech world 3500 years from now. "Here, Mr. Johnson, just put on this headset, and everything will be just fine." Induced memory amendment can be accomplished by a couple of things: fear, pain, or love/lust/pleasure. How do you learn to not put your hand on a hot stove? By getting burnt. Ultra-high tech sensory stimulation could accomplish this very easily, I think.

P.S. I'm not really sadistic, I just analyze EVERYTHING...

I was thhinking about this topic recently (or a variant) in the context of learning new languages etc.

You'd think we'd have a high-speed programming technique which would work in some sort of REM sleep or coma type state where you could pickup a language at level-0 (CT terms) overnight or over a few nights. Similary, other non-physical skills.

Arguably, with the right training harness (a body feedback suit to give kinesic (or is that kinesthetic?) feedback), you'd be able to train movement skills like martial arts and such.

You'd never get high levels of skills (in fact, I'd probably restrict to level 0, though people who have a high level skill may be able to obtain a temp +1 from 'honing') and they'd fade quick if not used (solidified and turned into genuine level 0 skills by prolonged practice).

But this would make being a free trader or other traveller much easier... and it seems feasible...

What about something like the mental training they have in Starship Troopers (the book - not the movie), where they are conditioned to fall asleep at a key word and things like that?

Kaladorn - your idea would work with CT/MT skill development quite well

CT had it that you had to go on a course - a course does not have to be at a university - hi tech computer aided learning would make jump a far more profitable experience.

MT - a course of computer aided learning could a few points for that fateful roll.

I think with hypnotics, you can't ever erase a memory. However, you can make someone forget how to locate it, requiring hypnotics to help relocate it. The memory is never destroyed, just 'misplaced'. Thus it can, with work, be recovered.

Elliot, good points. This does work (although with a bit more sophistication) into MT and CT training.

Back in the CT / MT days, I used a technology called 'sleep learning' to develop skills. A drug is used to induce the proper conciousness state at bed-time, then the a computerized device begins dribbling the information into your head - the result is extremely vivid dreams about field stripping the M-297 Rifle, Gauss-type, Imperial Standard or How To Recognize Common Ores. The technique worked well for purely intellectual skills, and not at all for purely physical ones. Common practice was to use the system only while in Jump to avoid the obvious dangers of being unable to rouse from bed when attacked, etc.

There was also a check made with each use (IIRC, it was a Simple check, no modifiers), failure results in nightmares instead of dreams (Ohmighod! The CO2 scrubbers are ATTACKING ME!!) and an inability to ever use the system again.

I never did come up with a method I liked for getting rid of skills/knowledge a player might not want.
