For the day, they were great. I liked the first one much better than the second one, but the second one seemed to have more "mechanically". Both games followed the official rules very closely, and MWM wrote the stories for both games. The character generator that came with the game was designed for use both with the game as as a computerized chargen system for rpgers. Chargen is by the MT book, and you can print out characters for use in your table top rpg game.
Today, I'm not sure how the games would play. They're very basic in comparison to today's games. I remember that characters were represented in a top-down map as a dot. If the group were travelling as one, they'd be represented as a big dot.
But, it's also a lot like table top role playing. "Here, this dot on the graph paper is you..."
When they were out, I enjoyed the games immensley. Today, I'm not sure if I'd play them again.
BTW, they're both free for download as abandonware on the net. Check Freelance Traveller. You'll probably have to get a DOS emulator to play them, too.
