Mapepire Cluster Error?

I was looking at the Beyond sector on Traveller Map and found the world Beaumonde in the Mapepire Cluster hex 0402 listed as having TL"V" & Mapepire Balsayn at 0602 listed with AVVV669-F. I'm sure this is an error. Does anyone have the correct listings?

Actually, it isn't "technically" an error. The current posted TravellerMap data for The Beyond is taken from the Paranoia Press published sector. "V" is used as a code in that booklet, and is designated in the notes as "V=Variable".

And, yes, your guess is as good as mine. :)

Is Northstar still there?

There are, I think, four or five worlds in that version of The Beyond that have V is one or more UWP spots. This was before the idea that the Second Survey was a snapshot. Heck, it was before most of the rest of the Charted Space map even had sector names.

I take Mapapire Balsayn to be a system without a mainworld. Populations flow too quickly for any one rock to be the main.
Beaumonde could be on a rapid Tech climb.
Rama is a belt full of "secret" asteroid labs. No two alike.
Northstar is a special case. It is described in a way that suggests that it is a ringworld version of the WellWorld, minus the Well itself. We think.

Yep.

In the published booklet, the "J" for diameter was defined as J=93,000,000 miles.

Also, all TLs above 15 in the published booklet were listed as "TL= +". TravellerMap has converted them all to "TL=G".

The "Variable" UPP

I was just thinking the other day that this idea is one that I would like for T5 (assuming it isn't there already, my BBB is buried in the other room at the moment). The ability to note that a given piece of the UPP is "Variable" would be really helpful.

This comes to mind because I was listen to NPR which was discussing the idea of Failed States (another code that would be great to include, though I suppose it's simply an Amber or Red Zone). I was thinking of how I would model a planet with an "official" Law Level of say, 6 - but where players were "shaken down" by the police as if it was Law Level 10 (given that the LL is a direct part of the mechanic to determine this sort of thing) and where the actual Law Level for all intents and purposes was a 2 or 3 if you had enough money for bribes.

Similarly, I've always struggled with the idea that a Balkanized world has polities which all have the same Law Level and Tech Level (using our own Terra as an example).

Maybe this belongs in another forum, but this thread reminded me of the issue right on the heels of the NPR article.

D.

That depends on which editions you've read. The MT answer was that a balkanized world's listed TL is the highest available and the LL is either the largest nation or the highest LL on-planet. Just like the starport is the highest, and local failed states or bad actors may not get full access to the listed port.
