Looking for players on Mars

Seriously,
Here's a plan. A dedicated group of us all apply for astronaut status on the proposed send people on a one way trip to Mars program.

Once there, when not establishing the Mars colony we play thousands upon thousands of Traveller adventures, create detailed backgrounds for every world in the entire Imperium and beyond and then one day when technology has advanced and we perhaps get the opportunity to return to Earth, we supply Traveller fans with the most detailed universe map ever created. :)

Best of all on Mars we will not be bothered by taxes, governments etc to hinder our games.

Wow! Just who on this board would have the physical and mental aptitude as well as the higher education etc? NASA has millions to pick through. We have a few thousand tops? The odds are way against us.

As for Taxes? Maybe, IF, they were going to ship us air, food (Pizza), DVDs, video games and internet etc... Oh, and expect nothing out of us in return.

Were you just bored near to death this morning? :)

NASA isn't pursuing off world colonies.

SpaceX has a tentative plan to eventually do one. See the D11 conference video with Elon Musk.

Some other company is planning to do a Mars Colony as a Reality TV show. They are NOT looking for classic astronaut material. They're looking for "interesting folks" with a minimum level of skill for making it work. Which said, they have no plans to bring anyone back.

Never said there were. Pointed out that they were in a much better position to obtain qualified people.

Unless there is a profit to be made or costs absorbed by somebody's Taxpayers, it isn't going to happen.

 And when the pilot is canceled the Pilot, and every idiot with him, gets canceled too? But then there are always syndicated reruns... They might look a lot like my Avatar though...

Tell these people they will
no longer have instant messaging
have about an hour lag to load a web page
and
always be at least 10 months behind everyone else to get the next greatest cell phone

Lets see how many still decide to go :)

More serious though, I bet many of the applicants just want to get on the reality show and have no real intent to go to Mars.

Hmm, there are a few people I'd would like to "volunteer" for that pjt. ;)

They'd have to do some serious psychological exams. Unless their idea of a reality TV show would be sending someone out on a one-way trip just to see how they react when it finally sinks in that they can't go back home.

EDIT: I could see a new version of the show Survivor where they vote people out of the airlock.

Their suggested idea of a reality show is just a 3 month stay in a "Hollywood studio" martian habitat.

IMO, more to do with hype and funding than any science.

I've given the Mars One project a hard look and was considering volunteering for it, but their funding idea is just too unrealistic for what they have stated they want to accomplish.

Mars One

I watched the space conference last month and discussed it in the Moot. Based on the biomedical discussions I'd put survival at under 10 years with a bit of luck. Based on the latest radiation data that might be pushing it. Even the Tito trip is extremely risky.

NASA does have plans for a moonbase but wants to solve a few of these details first. With the moonbase manufacturing can make more things possible. Perhaps their hoping for lead shielding too.

I`m reminded of a letter in Challenge magazine years ago just prior to `Desert Storm` from a group of Twilight 2000 players who just happened to be serving US military in Iraq.

As far as the `reality TV` plan to set up a Martian colony is concerned.
In the unlikely event this ever happens then the could do far worse than send a bunch of SF fans and gamers to the red planet.
That way when the whole thing inevitably goes pear shaped the people sent would probably turn out to be best equipped to survive and build a new Martian civilisation!
More likely if they just send the same sort of idiots that normaly oppear in thest things then they would just die horribly!
