Looking for a filk song

Tobias

Does anybody have the Traveller filk song "I wish they all could be Solomani" to the tune of "California Girls" saved somewhere? ISTR it was hosted on Doug Berry's site, but it seems to be gone now.

Regards,

Tobias

Rings a bell, but I can't find a copy.

My favourite Traveller filk is this:

"During the Fifth War"

[to the tune of "After the Gold Rush", by Neil Young]

I remember when the Army forces lifted
They were sent to assist the Marines
There were shuttles flying, and parents crying,
It was a tragic scene
I can recall the Imperial flag
Blowing out towards the sea
Watching as our sons and daughters left us, to fight the Zhodani
Watching as our sons and daughters left us, to fight the Zhodani

I was lying in a public shelter, with Zhodani ships above
We were laying helter-skelter, longing for some hope or love
There was a raid warden walking 'round, a psi helmet on his head
And I thought that if the Zhos could read my mind
Then I'd rather that I was dead
Thought that if the Zhos could read my mind
Then I'd rather that I was dead

Well, I dreamed I saw the Navy starships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun
There were Sunbursts flying, Zhodani dying
In their bunkers, one by one
All in a dream, all in a dream
I knew the war was won
Zhodani would no longer bask themselves in the warm rays of our sun
Zhodani would no longer bask themselves in our sun's rays....

Be sure once you find it, you will post it...as it sounds like a great deal of fun.

And, extra brownie points if you do sing and combine it with the music unless you have a voice like mine which tends to cause windows to shatter, babies to scream, and women to go into inexplictable panic.

And let me offer you my own "Expatriated Imperials":

"Expatriated Imperials"
To the tune of "Banana Republics" by Jimmy Buffet

Down to the border republics, far from Imperial suns,
Go the expatriated Imperials, hopin' to find some fun,
Some of them come for the trading, called by the lure of CR,
Some of them come commerce raiding, holding those "letters of marque",
Some of them are running from lovers, seeking an alien sky,
Some of them are running "small packages", some are running from the INI

Chorus:

Late at night you will find them
In the Startown dives and the bars,
Hustling the downport cuties 'fore they set off for the stars.
Spending those renegade credits
On some "Old Terran" rum and a lime,
Singing "Give me some words I can dance to
Or a melody to rhyme."

First you learn the native customs, soon a word of Vargr or two,
You know that you just can't trust them 'cause they know they can't
trust you.
Expatriated Imperials, feelin' so all alone
Agruing about TL levels just the way that they did back home

Way down here past the border, things aren't always serene
None of the locals are buying any second-hand Imperial dreams.

(Chorus)

Down to the border republics, far from Imperial suns
Go the expatriated Imperials, hopin' to find some fun....

Here's an oldie but a goodie.

I really, really hope I'm spelling grandfather's name right.

Yaskodray
(Sung to the tune of "Yesterday", by the Beatles)

Yaskodray...all those funny little games you played.
Uplifting doggies and kidnapping apes,
What were you up to, Yaskodray?

Final war...what'd you have to go and wreck it for?
And now you're lurking just behind your door,
Perhaps you couldn't take...anymore.

Some...said...you were gone,
Like your grandkids,
Passed away...
Then...we...found your home,
Now I wish we'd never came...

Yaskodray...
Dread Cthulu for a future age,
Something scared him and he hid away,
I'm scared that someone scared...Yaskodray.

With apologies to quite a few folk singers, and anyone who is tired
of the various Sunbeard debates on the TML...

If I Had A Pirate
(To the tune of, "If I Had A Hammer", sung by the Mommas and the
Poppas and others)

If I rolled a character,
I'd have him be a Pirate,
A strong, smart Pirate,
Yes that's my pla-an,
He'd make all the right rolls,
He'd make Pirate Lee-eader,
And he'd retire,
He'd muster out,
And get himself a starship...
Woah-oh-ih-ohhh,
That's my pla-a-a-an.
Yeah, ye-ah yeah...

If I had a Corsair,
I'd raid them in the Marches,
I'd raid them in the Sword Worlds,
Anywhere I can!!
We'd board Free Traders,
We'd board Sub Merchants,
And we'd make TONS of credits,
And never lose a battle...
Oh-yeah-ih-yeah, thats my plan, woah-oh-oh,
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Well I've got a Pirate,
And I've got a Cor-sair,
And I've got a Game, to play
Traveller, my frie-end!
Hey, Pirates are Canon,
They've got official - CharGen!
So we're gonna have FUN, together,
Until we meet some warships,
And then we'll roll, them up again, enn enn...
Woah, woa-oh-ho...
Yea

Subject: New Filk, just in time for Valentine's day!

But first, a question. Many of the filks in The Silly Era's filk section
are fairly serious. What would y'all think of a separate filk section to my
pages, with a link from both Sylea DP and TSE?

While you think about that, here's my latest creation. Based on one of my
favorite CSN tunes (got to see the do it entirely acoustic a few years
back.) Comments welcomed.

Trin's Veil

Original words and music: "Southern Cross" by Stephen Stills, Richard
Curtis and Michael Curtis
Parody by Douglas Berry

Signed aboard a Far Trader heading Rimward
Coming down from the Regina vicinity
Carrying sixty-five tons of mixed cargo
Bound for the up-port orbiting Treece

Heading through Lanth just making some easy money
But trying so hard just to run from all my yesterdays
>From each stop I would send you some X-Mail
But one night in jump I finally knew why we went astray

Think about...

Think about how many times the stars have called me onward
New worlds I have to see, the old ones just discarded
I pray you don't think of me as cold and empty-hearted...

I have traveled 'round the Main
Hoping - Hoping to break these chains
Of the memories that still remain

and someday I will

When you see Trin's Veil for the first time
You know just how small a man's dreams can be
'Cause you might be hurting now from my actions
But tomorrow is a new day, you'll forget all about me

So I'm leaving in the morning for the Outrim
And my love for you will come along, no matter how hard I beg
I have my ship and a cargo that needs to be lifted
She is all that I have left, and Beowulf is her name

Think about...

Think about how many times the stars have called me onward
New worlds I have to see, the old ones just discarded
I pray you don't think of me as cold and empty-hearted...

I have traveled 'round the Main
Hoping - Hoping to break these chains
Of the memories that still remain

And you know I will

And someday I will

I have lived all my life wandering the starlanes
And I've never had a home, for me it's just a word
I just ask, please, look up at the night sky
And know that I'm still out there, but I wish I was still with you

Underneath Trin's Veil

Here it is....from that site just posted:

Solomani Girls

by Craig Berry

Well Aslan girls are mean,
I really dig that fur they wear;
And the Vargr girls, with the way they shoot,
They chased me out when I went there,
Vilani nobles' daughters have a lot of things to steal,
And Zhodani girls, it's a funny thing, they seem to know just how I feel.

I wish they all could be Solomani girls...

The Rim is hot on fashion,
Everybody's dressed to kill
And if you say the wrong thing in the wrong startown bar
You can be damn sure they will.
The Virus trashed my favorite worlds,
And there's not a lot to save,
So I'm gonna stick with my Terran chick
And we'll surf the Empress Wave!

I wish they all could be Solomani girls...
