Logbook for "Grendel", Calam Flornoy, commanding

14, February, 2082 – Arrive Ariel. Directed dirtside for berthing. Ship impounded pending salvage court proceedings, although we are allowed to keep residence on board. Filled out paperwork to claim Grendel as salvage, only to have them rejected because of the wrong color ink.

Returning to the Grendel, was presented with a counter-claim on the Grendel. The Thanian embassy wants to ensure the passengers of the Grendel get their share of the salvage.

OOC: Do these logs take place in the OTU (or the Interstellar Wars-era OTU?) or in an ATU? If the latter is the correct answer, it seems an interesting TU indeed :)

15, February, 2082 – Completed paperwork. Was informed case would be heard in forty-four days, and that a barrister was suggested for our representation.

Visited with the Thanian ambassador, and negotiated their quitting claim for fifteen million Akeen.

Made an appointment with the Orcanan ambassador.

17, February, 2082 – Hired barrister for five thousand Akeen up front.

Spoke with Orcanan ambassador. Gathered information about his system. Claims a space anomaly that swallows vessels is in their system. Occasionally ships exit the anomaly, and are crewed by an extremely aggressive species. These ships can carry twice the weaponry the Orcanans can fit their ship with.

Mr. Thingol is AWOL.

18, February, 2082 – Mr. Levi was wounded during his shore leave. Our barrister has moved the hearing to the end of next week. Dr. Under moves to more prestigious quarters, and is on a speaking circuit with native physicians.

Sadwillow: Yes, third ship in a series of mis-adventures and accidents. But I am sure the Grendel will last. She's a well built ship, and now that Mr. Dahl, the get of an engineer, is no longer with the crew they will do better.

After all, JOT is the way to go! All scouts say so.

I'd love to read the full write up on this stuff. It's fun, but Mr. Flornoy seems a bit... well, laconic.

Anyway, back to the show.

Sadwillow: There isn't any other write up. Flornoy is filtering a lot of stuff. After all, this is the ship's log, not a chronicle of the crew. Just the retentiveness of the player doing what the Captain would.

Sadwillow, the ship's doctor is supposed to be putting his "letters to mom" in the forums. Perhaps a few PMs from interested parties to ToadSmokingDuckMonkey will nudge him into getting his postings up.

BTW, ToadSmokingDuckMonkey is the doctor referred to in Faldiawadi's sig. :)

27, February, 2082 – The hearing was short, marred only by my not being a citizen of the D.R. Akeen. We were awarded the Grendel. Paid the barrister his remaining forty-five thousand fee. He rolled in the paperwork for me to become a citizen.

Situation Report
Ariel (Ariel Subsector, 0701)
1, March, 2082

The Grendel arrived in system on 14, February, 2082. Ariel is a class C starport, with both High and Low ports. The planet is a bureaucracy, and requires extensive paperwork for all official transactions. Be warned, some forms must be filled out in black ink, an import to this world. Official proceedings take extensive time, and a native barrister is suggested to expedite paperwork and hearings.

Local regulations require grav vehicles to stay below 10 meters elevation. A branch of the Bank of Akeen is available. Various consulates hold offices here, as well.

Night life is lively, although can sometimes be dangerous if you are not careful.

Ariel has an extensive embassy system, and the D.R. Akeen appears to have relations with systems in a 20 parsec radius, excepting the Holy See.

2, March, 2082 – Mr. Costigan inquired where Mr. Markov was. After overriding the locks on his cabin, found two duffels but no other indication he was ever on board. One duffel labeled for Mr. Levi, the other for myself.

A note in my duffel stated Mr. Markov had finished training his replacement, and that he would stay on Ariel. Due to this, I have re-ordered the crew.

Levi – Chief Engineer, Chief Security
Round – Gunner, Engineer
Thingol – Navigator, Gunner
Costigan – Med Tech, Security
Under – Doctor
McLaughlin - Steward

7, March, 2082 – Arrive Namitin. Contact with freighter [A2, Great Pumpkin] to gather information on main planet.

Given clearance to land on Pad 4. Purchased filter masks for crewmembers use on surface. Gave crew shore leave. All returned except Miss McLaughlin, who was visiting her family. Contacting her, she informed me she had been kidnapped and was in a container with about thirty other females. Tracking her comm signal indicated she was within two kilometers and NNW of our ship before contact was lost. This was about the container loading area on the starport.

With the tower being closed for the evening, and the local constabulary busy with dinner, the crew mobilized to investigate while I powered up the Grendel as a precaution. Contacted the McLaughlin clan and requested assistance in searching the several hundred containers in the area. A shoot-out erupted between my crew and a security team on a 1000-ton container ship. Contact with all but Dr. Under was lost, and Under was not coherent.

Leaving the Grendel on foot and approaching the container ship, I found one of the air-rafts crashed into the cargo bay, Levi dead of a head wound, Costigan and Thingol unconscious, and Under mobile but with a concussion. Communication with Miss McLaughlin was regained upon entry to the cargo bay of the container ship.

We released Miss McLaughlin and the other females from the container, which had been outfitted with a rudimentary sanitary system, dehydrated rations, and some water, and placed the security team in it. Removed all personnel to the Grendel, including Round who was found under the container ship with a spinal injury.

Five McLaughlin’s arrived soon after. One trained in medical arts diagnosed Dr. Under with a skull fracture, obtained during the air-raft ramming the cargo bay, and repaired Mr. Round’s shattered vertebra, also from the ramming. The others provided security and evacuation of the females to their respective homes.

8, March, 2082 – Early morning delivery of collapsible fuel tank. Killian McLaughlin, Miss McLaughlin’s brother joins crew as an engineer, and begins installation of new fuel tank.
