Law Enforcment

Savar

SOC-12
Having not read all versions of Travellers is there an Imperial Law Enforcment Arm ? People that would track down and investigate criminals/crimes ?

if there is could I be directed to it ?

Generally there are references to an Imperial Ministry of Justice in some JTAS articles, in a couple of Challenge articles, like the one on skipping.

We really have very little information on the Imperial Ministries at all; most of it is T4/M0, and the rest is CT or MT. The MT stuff is mostly non-canonical (IRIS is presented as a hoax in Survival Margin, thankfully).

There is a reference somewhere to the Imperial Ministry of Justice Special Branch, but I can't recall where; I think it is either a Challenge or JTAS article.

Thank You.

Was thinking of a Campain with a NPC/PC that is the leader of the group( who are deputies or something )
The main NPC/PC would be a GM controled char in the party. and the party was assisting them in tracking someone/group down. so I would IMTU it mostly all then. heh maybe if I do a good anuff job I could do an artical about it.

vary cool link, thank you
as the system I will be useing is T20

I will probably be using, stat information from the playtest documents from the players book, and just adjust the names of group and ranks

IRIS

Imperial R___ ___ Service.
Supposedly they do black ops and verify the heirs of the Emperors.

CG and Writeup in Challenge. Supposedly supposed to have been a gag.

Not Imperium related, but Sol Sec acts as a quasi police (more like secret police and/or secret service akin to the KGB) for the Solomani. You might take their organization and template a less politically motivated like agency onto the Imperium.

Look no further than the scout service for your Imperial law enforcement agents.

"Agents of the IISS Security branch have great authority to arrest, detain, and question individuals suspected of violations of Imperial law, and can demand cooperation from local authorities as the need arises."

page 6, LBB6.

And two other pieces of info I've managed to find:

Agents of the IISS security branch have the widest powers of any Imperial law enforcement agancy.
IISS article, page 13, JTAS 6, by Loren Wiseman and Marc Miller;

Finally, there are rumours that a number of executive undercover forces operating under Imperial warrants inhabit obscure corners of the Scout Service, but little proof is avaiable.
Library Data, CT Adventure 4: Leviathan.

Anybody remember what IRIS stood for and what they supposedly did?
The Imperial Regency of Intelligence and Security.

IRIS has five mandates:

1. ensure and enforce the lawfull succession of rightful heirs to the Imperial throne;

2. prevent "unreliable" individuals from gaining direct access/proximity to the person of the Emperor;

3. check and compare all information relayed to the Emperor against IRIS' own independent sources;

4. identify all significant anti-Imperial covert activities initiated by foreign powers. Formulate and expedite responses thereto;

5. conduct and maintain covert activities in foreign territories, pursuant to ensuring the security of the Imperium.

2. prevent "unreliable" individuals from gaining direct access/proximity to the person of the Emperor;
Boy, they really did a sloppy job when Archduke Dulinor was paying a visit, huh? :D

IRIS Guard: Excuse me, your excellency Archduke Dulinor. But is that a fully-loaded Gauss Pistol in your pocket, or are you just happy to see the Empress?

Dulinor: Uhhh.... no no, that's just my pipe-lighter, yeah that's the ticket! You know how me and Strephon love to smoke together. Nothing beats a nice puff of Denebian tobacco, right?

IRIS Guard: A pipe-lighter, of course Sir. Carry on.

I'm still working this out for MTU - eventually I plan to do a write-up for the Ministry of Justice like the Ministry of Conservation, but right now all I have are some scattered notes.

Most branches of the Imperial bureacracy have some sort of security and/or enforcement arm. IMTU the IMoJ magistrates have their own security service (constables? marshals? bailiffs? not sure what I want here yet) that is responsible for protection of the Imperial Courts, provides service of warrants, and may apprehend Imperial felons.

The IMoJ also coordinates IMPOL, an information clearinghouse on criminals and unlawful activities in the Imperium. The actual work of IMPOL is conducted by local planetary law enforcement officers and technicians, not IMoJ or other Imperial personnel - the ministry provides logistical support only.

That's as far as my notes go so far. I plan for the Imperial Attorney-General's office to include an investigative branch - I need to expand on this quite a bit as time permits.

I also abandoned the canon references to the IISS security office IMTU - IMTU, the Scout Service is more like NOAA, with no overt enforcement duties except in time of war under IN direction.

IMTU, the IISSEnfB is the Interpol type agency.

But that enforcement branch justifies a HUGE range of special skills...

Looking forward to it! :D

I've always seen the Imperial Ministry of Justice to be a totally judicial body, it judges and issues warrants.
Since the first tier of Imperial interstellar government is at the subsector level, I have the subsector Duke as part of this.
It's up to the other services to provide the enforcement - just look at the number of police actions the Imperial Marines get to take part in ;)

edit - many years later I have added a limited enforcement arm although I am loath to use the name Marshall as it is too US centric, and I'm not too keen on bailiff or sheriff either. I need a name for MoJ appointed investigator/enforcement role...
the two in the frame at the moment are reeve and magistrate.

Sigg: Which still leaves room for the Bailiffs and Bail Enforcement types.

IMTU, IMoJ is mostly involved in bureaucratic pursuits. They review local laws, advise nobles, provide bailiffs, magistrates, and court officers for those nobles and worlds that need them, the starport courts, as well as the sector and subsector level imperial courts, and post and pay the bounties. If a local world issues a bounty, IMoJ will hold the escrow and post the bounty IF the local IMoJ office at the starport feels it worthy.

Most of the bailiffs, skip traceres, and bounty hunters IMTU are sponsored by megacorporations or world banks that have loaned the money for ship purchase.

How does the MoJ fit into your noble structure Aramis?

IMTU it is made up of judges etc. appointed by the local sector duke, based on nominations from the subsector dukes themselves.

I believe the Special Branch was the invention of one or more of the Keiths in one of the non-JTAS magazines or a FASA adventure.
