Just bought T5

There's 4 videos here: http://www.sketchup.com/learn

I went over the first 3 and did the exercises along the way. From there I just winged it using the search feature on the help website (linked to in the help menu option) when I couldn't figure something out.

I'm using the free version, so there's a few advanced tools I don't have. Sigh. I know what ti ask for for Christmas now. :)

Thank you for the link!

Hopefully an elf heard your request. ;)

Sadly, even the wine did not arrive when I expected so I did not have anything to 'drown my sorrows' (of having to wait longer for T5) in. When I arrived home from a funeral, however, I saw the wine had arrived while I was away today. I also saw that we had guests.

I visited with our guests until they left and then discovered that my wife, in all her wisdom, “forgot” to mention that my package arrived as well. (It was wise of her not to tell me until after the guests had left or I would not have been able to keep my mind on the conversation.) So now, with our son asleep, our fireplace patched up and the fire burning, and with a nice glass of wine in hand I will sit down, read, and ignore the biting cold outside the frosted pane.

A fitting end to my story of the acquisition of Traveller 5.

Glad to hear that you have it in hand. Looking forward to your thoughts as you read and digest and begin trying things out.

Don't stop now. Let's hear your thoughts as you read.

Oh, don't worry. This thread was just to pass the time until I got the rules. I'll create other threads for other thoughts as I work through the book. Here's a teaser:

First thought: "Well, that's definitely the size of book I would expect for $75! Glad I'm not disappointed in that department :D" (Yes, I think in emoticons)

Smart move from your wife. When my wife called me at work to tell me that a box had come to the house from a Marc Miller, it was tough to keep my mind on work; especially since I didn't order it!

Was it from....the future?

Nope. Still had all the errors. :)
Actually, I was sent a book, with signed messages to me (from both Marc and Norris of Regina) inside. When I contacted Marc, he said he made a mistake and to keep it.

So now I have the dubious honor to have recognition from Norris as a Knight of Efate by mistake!

The book that came to me was signed by Marc Miller, but not Norris of Regina. I just assumed that was standard for all the hard-cover books, or maybe for the first printing run...?

Mine's signed by Marc and Emperor Strephon.

Looks like Strephon knighted me. I'm the Knight of Uakye.

I guess I'd better look up that world and see what it's like.

Bay/main weapons

I have been trying to get my head around the starhip design rules and have been wondering about how bay and main weapons fit in with ACS starships. Bay weapons and meason main weapons are mentioned in the rules but things like restictions on numbers per starship and tonnage restrictions seem to be absent. How do you incorperate these into an ACS design? Are they similar to CT High Guard (one bay/1000 tons) and main weapons like (small) spinal mount? Is there something else in the text that I might have missed.

Well, as the title of this thread suggests, I *just* purchased the rules, so I haven't gotten that far in them yet. Maybe post a new thread with the subject something like "starship design question" and it might attract the right kind of reader who knows the answer. Just a thought.

The rules, from what I've read, are okay. I wish the CD had been just a touch more organized, maybe with some hot links and animated menus. Otherwise I have non complaints.

A few rounds of online gaming, and then it's back to writing.

Design walkthoughs

There are a lot of options.

I have two ship design walkthrus. They might help: http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/showthread.php?t=30549

I've also got "Book 2" style design rules using T5, linked in the page above, plus about 67 draft design examples without walk-through information.

Thanks for posting the links. Both examples are very helpful and have also drawn my attention to things that I missesd on prior readings of the rules.

I have also visited the website with the online interactive ship bulding app. It is also very instructive. The interactive nature of it helps to speed up asteep learning curve. I wish to exend a very big thanks for putting it all together.
