JTAS Design Contest #24 Initial Ideas (Revision 2 0521 PDT 4/15/04)

Below is the text from Onno Meyer's post on the JTAS Design board. If interested in voting for a design crieteria or you don't have access to the JTAS boards let Onno know at onno.meyer@gmx.de .

Note 2: Onno has given me permission to include his email address, which I have included. Whew,
 , dodged another gaffe.

Note 1 (added 04/14/04): I originally had Onno's email address listed, after some thought I decided to have you contact me instead. Sorry

Well, my thanks go to Leslie for hosting the contest, to the people
who voted for me, to the people who voted for someone else and to
the other participants.

I have a few ideas for Contest 24.

The first would be to write the Imperial Naval Intelligence estimate of the "new" Darrian TL13 cruisers which are mentioned in Humaniti, p. 44, complete with estimated technical specs. Since the Imperium knows just about nothing about the ships, you would be free to come up with any TL13 cruiser that makes sense to you. The boss wants
specs, so you write 'em :)

The Zhodani have been going towards the core for ages now. Surely there are some very interesting ships in those fleets. Write a ship that makes perfect sense in the context of a core expedition and little or no economic sense in the rest of known space, like a jump-6 far trader or a jump-capable factory ship with built-in nursery,
school, university and retirement home ...

To stay with the Interstellar Wars theme, what about a Terran trader which can convincingly claim to be civilian and still put up a good
fight if relations break down, again.

Any preferences? I'll listen a bit, then I'll decide and write the official specs and timeline.

Onno

The Terran Trader sounds like a good idea, and I could find another use for it... ;)

The Darrian Cruiser is also an interesting design brief.

And the Zhodani core expedition ship!!! (But aren't the Zhos limited to jump 5? ;) )

Lo Flynn and Sigg Oddra,

Thank-you for the comments and notice that I deleted Onno's email address. I was not awake enough to think that maybe Onno doesn't want his address so openly advertised

 . Anyway, Sigg Oddra may I forward your post to Onno as input for the contest. Flynn, do you have a similar form of input? If you do please either post it here or send me your input and, with your permission, forward them to Onno.

By all means send him my comments Tom.

You could add that if I were to choose one it would be the Terran Trader.

For the high tech Darrian Cruiser would everything have to be "by the book" or could we invent "new systems" (pure fantasy, of course ;) )?

Hehe, you thinking what I was thinking Sigg? ;)

Probably not
I just checked my old MT hoping to "import" a spinal disintegrator, <sigh> but its TL17 :( so close...

Oh well, back to the weapons r&d lab

No disintegrators :(

... but there are meson gun turrets, repulsor/tractor manipulators, very efficient fusion power plants :D
What fun can you have with toys like that... ;)

Morning Sigg Oddra and far-trader,

Sigg Oddra thank-you for your permission and I will pass your comments and question(s) on to Onno. So, far-trader I feel that you like the idea of the "new" Darrian TL13 cruiser?

Morning Thomas,

Indeed, once a couple minor points are addressed as I posted on JTAS. Which I see Onno has done this morning, not that I was worried it would be a problem.

This of the three seems the most interesting in many ways. Now as long as nobody else was planning on sticking a Star-Trigger(tm) in their design...

...aww who am I kidding. Everybody wants to do that
I just hope we all resist, maybe
file_22.gif

Now where are those schematics...

Please pass on the following:

I think they all make an excellent concept, so I'm cool with any of them. However, if someone put a gun to my head and shouted "Choose One, Dammit!", I'd have to say:

Darrian GTL13 cruisers.

If forced to decide further, I'd choose Interstellar Wars over Zhodani Core Mission.

But they are all good concepts, and should be fun to produce designs for.

Enjoy,
Flynn

By the way I've already done a T20 conversion of the Darrian TL13 cruiser as it was described in TNE, you can find it here . It shouldn't be too difficult to convert to GURPS, now that I understand GT Starships ;)

Now as to what INI thinks it's capable of ...

Lo far-trader,

Yes, I saw both your and Onno's posts on the subject. I don't want a star trigger in the design, but there are other interesting ideas for the use of anti-matter.

No fair, we don't even know if this will be the design cost ;) . What are some kind of democrat, maybe the Republican should put you on the list of investigations
